So I am putting the final touches on the restoration of my 72 13' Sport. I am using the Teleflex Safe-T steering system that came with the boat when I bought it. To make a long story short I needed to buy a new helm for the system, but am using the original cable.
My question is: is there a flange or other piece on the end of the cable section that inserts into the helm. The threaded cable feeds in and out of the helm, but when i turn the steering wheel the threaded cable moves the entire cable (including the housing).
I think that I am missing a part that the cotter pin inserts into, to lock the cable in place so that it moves the engine, not itself. Any picture of the part missing would be appreciated or a part number. I searched on the teleflex website but could not come up with a name or part number to search for. Thanks.

It sounds like you have an old cable that is not compatible with the new helm.
I would have advised to buy both a new helm and a new cable.
Probably cheaper in the long run.
Now, you probably need the adapter for the old cable to adapt to the new helm.
Contact Teleflex for this adapter.

Yes... there is a special end on the cable that makes the connection. Its purpose is to move the inner core of the cable vs, the entire cable.
I agree... with the previosu post... if you're going to replace the helm, replace everything. A few years agp. the outer cover of my Telex cable dsplit open exposing the inner core. The boat could still be steered but it was very difficult. In the wrong situation you might find yourself unable to control the boat well... or not at all. On the water, I don't think there are many owners equipped to handle a repair.
I replaced the helm and the cable... making the curve at the stern ofr the connection at the engine was a challenge,
Do it right... do it once.

Thanks for the advice, looks like another purchase haha.
This project is really making the acronym B.O.A.T (Bring out another thousand) come true.

Look on the bright side, I just bought a new helm and cable for my 17 Montauk and spent a few bucks over $100. Based on the B. O. A. T. thing you will have $900 left over. :-)))

I looked on other sites and can only find a converter to use the old style helm with the new style cable.
QCII Converter

(The above will not work for you unfortunately)
I can't seem to find an adapter that goes from a new style helm to an older style cable.
You may need to buy a new style cable.
Cables run about $90 for 8' to 20' Teleflex cables.

The entire Helm and cable runs about $130 with 8' to 20' cable.

Good Luck.

Gary,
I don't think we are making cwlyth feel very good.
At $107 for the entire kit with the helm and cable, that's a good price.

You might be right Joe but $23 in my pocket always makes me feel just a little better and being able to steer the boat is Priceless!

On another note, I removed my teleflex helm to install the new SafeT QC I bought. There was nothing wrong in the helm but my cable was rusted fast.
You can have the old one I removed that might work for you and just pay the freight to you. I think it is called a Big T head and it has a large nut on the cable end that screws in to it and 4 screws hold the face plate on it.
Here is a link of what I have and headed to the landfill. http://www.westmarine.com/1/1/10236-big-t-rotary-helm.html
Speak quick if you want it.

Joe is right. You can get an adapter to fit a newer style cable with an older helm but not the othertway around.
