I need to repower my 15' Super Sport Limited, 630 lbs, because of the stock fibreglass seating. Original power:
Yamaha 70hp 233lb 2 stroke. Great all-round performance. My choices are:
Yamaha 70hp 260lb 4 stroke. Will it have the jam?
E-Tec 60hp 240lb 2 stroke. Will it perform?
E-Tec 75hp 320lb 2 stroke. Will the extra weight hurt?
None of these engines is a perfect replacement. The boat is used for tubing, crowd moving, 2 person touring, not much fishing. The Evinrude dealer recommends the 75 over the 60 for better performance. The E-Tec technology is preferred, but not at the expense of performance or ride.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has first hand experience with these engines on a 15'. Sage opinion is welcomed.
Just had a ride on a 15' Classic with a Mercury 90 2 stroke. Now that is a very interesting ride at close to full throttle, even with 2 big guys onboard.

I hung a 60HP ETEC on my 15 Sport and I couldn't be happier! It pops out of the hole like no other boat I have ever owned and will comfortably push it just shy of 40. With the lower weight it rides perfect in the water even at idel speed. It's quiet, sips gas and hardly uses any oil at all! Yes, I love it!

Here is the list of Current Engine Choices and Weights.
http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...icle_id=77

The 15' models have a Max HP rating of 70 HP...
Most dealers will not mount an engine that overpowers the boat because they could then be legally responsible for any injuries that might occur.
You might ask your dealer about that.
Also, you would have to check with your insurance company and see if they will still insure your boat if it is overpowered and at what extra cost if any.

I would not go with any old 2 stroke technology.. These are almost obsolete and almost no longer available for good reasons.

The two choices I would go for is either the E-Tec 60 HP or the Yamaha 70 HP 4 stroke.
It would be nice if someone had the new 2010 Yamaha 70 Hp 4 stroke so we could get some performance data from them.

Well, I got about 6 hours on a new F70 Yamaha on a 1983 Sport 15, but I do not have any performance figures, yet. I need to borrow a GPS. The weight seems fine, the boat handles very well. It has to be fast, it's rated for 6300 rpm. I can hit 6100 with what I think is a K series 17 Yamaha prop. What I really like is that I can bring her up that fast without the unstable chine walk tendency of the old set up. Hole shot is terrific but I have not pulled any water sport stuff yet.

It's real quiet at idle and sounds like a sewing machine at high speeds. I have no idea of fuel economy and probably never will.

If it were me I would consider the Yamie 4 stroke. Only 33 lbs heavier than the 2 stroke 70. I have a 17 SSL/with a 90 Yamie. The consoles are shifted slightly aft putting more weight back there accentuating the issue even more. I think 320lbs will too much for a 15... Now I were to re-power the 17 with a new engine today it would be the etec, again because of the weight. From what I have seen over the year the 4 strokes have been catching up in (if not better) in performance compared to 2 strokes.

There may people on here with 15's that may have thoughts.

My-2-cents...

I have a Suzuki DF50 on my 15 CC as you can see on my Personal Page. I am very pleased with the performance. WOT is 35 (GPS) the weight is 243 and sits well in the water. THe motor is very strong with throttle to spare when pulling skiers. BG

Thanks for the replies. I ordered a Yamaha 70 4 stroke. I will start with the same K19 painted SS prop that was on the 70 2 stroke and go through the break-in before tweeking anything. I will report my impressions and gps speeds later. I just spoke with another 15' Classic owner who is very pleased with his new Yamaha 70 4/ (speed, hole shot, quiteness, fuel economy) His reference is a 50 2/.

I would love to get the new yamy 70 on my 15 but COST. Am looking at a cherry 2002 Yamy 85 with low hours for a steal. I figure it will be good for 50? Also looking to score a jackplate.
