hi all hope you all are having a great summer. would appreciate your thoughts. is it safe to run sea foam in atank of fuel [18 gallons or so] if ialready have marine stabil in the fuel [maintenance mixture , not storage]. motor is a 1978 merc 80. and is hesitating a little . im hoping the sea foam will clean/decarb motor thus fixing this problem.motor runs great at high speeds . slight hesitation and occasional rough idle is the issue [low speed jets?]just dont want to mix the two additives if its abad idea. im anxious to try the sea foam and 18 gallons last quite awhile. thanks in advance for the help

I would run the tank almost dry before I added another fuel additive.

There should be absolutely no problem using STA-BIL and Sea Foam in conjunction with one another at recommended levels. These 2 products are formulated to accomplish different things and are often used together. The STA-BIL is a fuel stabilizer designed to inhibit the formation of varnish deposits, especially during periods of intermediate and long term storage. Sea-Foam is a cleaner designed to remove varnish and carbon deposits among other things. Sea-Foam is recommended in different concentrations depending on its usage. Read the recommendations on the can for you particular usage.

How old is the 18 gallons of fuel that is in the tank now ? how old is the Fuel Filter ? Fuel line ? connections ? I always start with a fresh tank of fuel, then add the Sea foam to that. Sea foam is designed to clean the fuel and intake systems, and preserve the quality of the fuel that you start with, it won't bring back fuel to it's original quality once it has started to "sour", remember that even with fuel stabilizer in it, Gasoline "quality" will begin to degrade after 30 days.

I don't think there's anything out there that works as well as Sea Foam does when wanting to clean out your carbs. I've used it in our ATVs, motorcycles, my truck and the Whaler with excellant results each time. I typically pour it into the existing fuel in the tank and run it through that way.

Good luck!!

Hi David,

Years ago I had a 78 Merc like yours, but mine was an 85 HP... Anyway like others suggested I would not run a combination of additives. You never know how they will react with each other. I had a very bad experience years ago mixing these kind of additives to remove water in a tank.

I am true believer in this stuff (Seafoam) but only to a point. If you have really gummed carbs you will need a rebuild. I would run a high dose of this stuff from a small tank, 3 gals or so with a high concentration half the can, Put the rest of it in your regular tank. Another product that works well is Berrymans B12 (Chemtool) this one seems to be used more for cleaning carbs and injectors while Seafoam also is a de-carbon and moisture product. I have used both. I use Seafoam regularly, several cans a season.

good luck

to answer the age of fuel question, its fresh . i do tend to cap the tank often.but i doubt the oldest of the mix is month and a half old maybe a little older but not much. the boat is used year round. water seperator is changed reguarly . motor has been doing this for awhile .sometimes i think a shot of water got through ,but its pretty constant.you guys seem split as far as adding both sea foam and stabil. tank is down about six gallons now .maybe cap it and try standard dose of sea foam? never used the stuff , but i know most people swear by it. left my small tank in fl. or i would use it. plan on using the boat next weekend , i ll let you know how it goes.if anyone has more input as far as using both additivs in the same tank please let me know thanks again

I've never mixed those two additives, I've mixed "Carbon Guard" in fuel, and I've mixed Sea Foam in fuel, I have even mixed those two fuels with both additives together and nothing bad has happened. I've never tried it with "Sta-bil", and "Sea-Foam", as "Jon" pointed out the chemical reaction may NOT be what you want. If you have water in your fuel the engine usually won't start, to investigate you can pull a spark plug and check for water drops on the plug.

I use them together all the time and have no issues. I was told this year not to use Sea Foam as your only fuel stabilizer especially with ethanol but using in combination with Marine Stabilizer would be fine. If you need to do a decarb treatment, i would use a small 3 gallon tank so you could really load up on the sea foam. You probably don't want to run a high concentration all the time so I wouldn't try to do it off my main tank.
