I have a 90 horse Mercury outboard. when I put it into reverse from the controller the reverse does not engage the gear in the motor. is there an adjustment I can make.
Has it always gone into reverse with no problems? Check the linkage on both sides and see if it is still attached. Maybe the cable is broke? If that doesn't work take it off on the motor side and pull on it with a pair of pliars. It might just pull out and you will see if it's broke.

Checking to see if you can put it in reverse manually at the engine is a good idea. If that works, you have a rigging problem. If you can't you most likely have a problem in your lower unit. When mine wouldn't shift it was because a gear failed a tooth and got in the way in the lower unit. Not a cheap fix.
