Need help diagnosing a fussy warning buzzer, 1989 Evinrude 70 VRO. It may sound continuosly at key-on, cold engine. It may not (often doesn't) "self-test" at key on. Using Clymer diagnosis, it sounds when either the tan temp wire is grounded or the tan oil sensor wire is grounded. When the horn is sounding continuously at key-on (cold engine), disconnecting the tan oil tank wire silences it. I'd like to know where the buzzer gets the signal to "self-test". I'd like to know if it is possible that the sensor in the oil tank could cause a continuous horn. I had the horn not working one day, noticed the nut which secures the ignition switch in the dash a little loose. Snugged it up, turned the key on, continuous horn. Tried the key a day or 2 later, "self-check" worked. Tried the key today, continuous horn ( I did fill the oil tank just before that, from approximately 1/4 full). Is it possible the ignition switch plays a role?
Any input would be helpful

I think you found one problem when you disconnected the oil tank wires. On 1995 and earlier "VRO" engines with a separate tank, the oil level alarm is triggered by a float in the tank. Electronics inside the oil tank pickup assembly time the low oil warning beeps from 20 to 40 seconds apart. When these electronics go belly-up, they can give all kinds of weird or solid warning tones. Just leave the wires disconnected and watch the oil level each time you fill up with gas.

The self test beep when you turn the key to ON is generated inside the horn using the short ground wire that is attached to it. If the electronics inside the horn go bad or it loses it's ground through the short black wire, there will be no self-test beep. Sustituting a known good warning horn is the quickest troubleshooting procedure.

Thanks, I'm grateful. I'll leave it unhooked for now and investigate a replacement horn and perhaps a pickup or know good tank.
I appreciate it.

We have an article in our article section.
Take some time to look through all the articles.
The article link is the second one on the left sidebar.

As seahorse mentions, the oil tank sender can and does go out. So can the warning horn.
I had an oil tank sender go out on me once and got a good deal on a brand new tank assembly. Once I replaced the tank, everything was fine.

Thanks for the link. Good information. I believe I'll go tank (and horn) shopping.
