I have an 1986 17' montauk. It's in poor condition and I intend to do my best to restore it to it's deserved glory. I am, however, a novice. A few of the initial projects I'd like to take on are putting the battery and oil tank in the console and putting in a platform across the stern. It seems this has been done by other folks on these forums. Would you screw the battery box and oil resevoir into the console or the deck or would you find away to strap them somehow? As far as the platform/seat is concerned, how did you mount it? Do you just screw into the fiberglass? I appreciate any advise. Although I don't have any experience I really don't want to do an amateur job if I can help it. Oh and one more thing... It only had one battery when I bought it. Are two batteries necessary?
1. There are different ways to install the battery in the console.
Some people cut a hole in the floor so the battery sets on the deck. You can then put the footman loops on the floor and run your battery strap around those and the battery box.
2. Because the oiler tank is not heavy, you can use the hardware that came with the tank and mount it directly to the floor of the console.
3. The rear seat of platform can screw directly into the small lip on the gunnels. A few screws should keep it from bouncing around and secure in place. You may need a center support of some kind.
4. Two batteries.... Not necessarily....
If you can emergency start your main motor with a rope, then many people do not find two batteries necessary, especially on a Montauk.
I would strongly recommend a kicker motor no matter what. Period... No ifs, ands, or butts...

Wow! Certainly wasn't expecting such a quick reply. So the gunnel has wood under it as opposed to just foam? And if I do put on a kicker I would need a second battery, wouldn't I? Loved the slide show, Joe. Brought back some fond memories.... I had the distinct privilege of growing up on Oahu. Especially loved the pics of Dukes and the view heading out to the North Shore. Every one should get to the islands at least once in their lives... Mahalo from a jealous haole!!
No, you really don't need another battery for the kicker either if the kicker is rope start as opposed to electric start.
My kicker is rope start "only"...... I like it that way... Keep it simple in a Montauk and keep the weight down. Some people like electric start kickers on the larger Whalers.
