Any opinions out there about putting a Honda 90hp 4 stroke on a 96 Montauk? I would like a 90 and with EPA regs coming into effect there aren't many 2-strokes left out there. The Honda 90 looks really big sitting on that transom and I've been told that it's too big and heavy for the Montauk. Any thoughts? Thanks
The current model has been redesigned and is significantly lighter than prior years.
Take a look at the engine choice article Joe wrote and then check Honda's site for the current model weight.
Hi there, in response to your new engine inquiry, I just replaced my 1990 2 stroke Yamaha 90hp with a
2010 90hp Yamaha 4 stroke. My whaler is a 17' 1990 Montauk. I also have a 8hp 4 stroke 2009 Yamaha auxillary motor, and I couldn't be happier. The new 90hp weighs 369 lb dry, and I had no problems at all with the extra weight. I put a Yamaha performance series 17' prop on it and it tops out at 40 mph. I'm sure that the Honda will not be much different in weight.
I know a few classic Montauk owners who have the prior version and would say it is close to 400 lbs.
While the hull can take the weight, it will squat a bit and the splash well drains will be below the waterline at rest.
If not already done, I would move the battery to the console to help shift some weight forward.
The Honda 90 is a very good motor so I would not dismiss the boat you are considering just for the weight. (Note - I recently moved my battery forward to counter a very heavy engine and it made a significant difference with the boat trim)
A sea trial will help you determine if the boat/motor package is acceptable to you. If priced right, it is a great combination.
As for the naysayer, do they prefer another brand of motor or boat? Everyone has a bias, keep that in mind.
My 83 has a 2001 Honda 90. She squats to about mid splashwell plugs at rest with 2 batteries in the console and 28 gallons of fuel under the rps. Yes it is a little low but the motoer is awesome and I wouldn't change a thing.
