Calling all Small johnson evinrude owners for little guidance
Hi All, As some of you know I added a 4.5 HP kicker to my 17. Basically it was $160. basket case that I got running pretty well and have touch up (OK completely repainted the lower half...:-)
Engine is running pretty well, but will shake slightly at very low idle. I did need to give it high dose of seafoam and Berrymen chemtool. Definitely improved.
Anyway there is a low speed adjustment on the carb. As I slowly turn the dial as its running in gear or neutral seems to do absolutely nothing, NADA, zero changes... I remember as a kid that those adjustment on the old OMC's would significantly change the way an engine would run, back then there were two, high and low speed adjustments.
My shop manual does not say much about this. What does this adjustment really do...???
Thx

What you're describing sounds like the low speed adjustment screw however, because the engine runs does not mean that the jet is clean. Try removing the screw and blowing compressed air through the passage.
Keep us posted.
See you on the lake,

Turn the idle adjustment screw clockwise Lean). the rpms should increase, keep turning untill the engine begins to cough. Make a note of the position and turn the screw counter clockwise A(rich) untill the engine starts to stumble. Make a note of that position. Then turn the screw halfway between the two points, and that should be your optimum adjustment. If you don`t notice any change when you turn the screw either way, Your low speed needle is worn out, or some packing got into an orifice . Buy a rebuild kit with new low and high speed needles. Probably available at Napa under the Sierra brand.
Looks like a carb rebuild is in the this little guys future...
Today we went out on the lake and it would not start... Yesterday in a tub on a cart (in my yard) it stated 3rd pull and ran pretty well for about an hour... what the @$#%f....
So I am thinking that all the cleaners I used, dislodged some junk in the carbs and now the passages (or jets) are blocked. It is not getting fuel...
It was very odd that the slow speed adjustment did not react to any adjustment what so ever....
So a carb rebuild on the slate after about 12 other projects around the house...
Thanks Norm, Kevin, Rich...
