I think Pete may have hit dead on it. In that it was OK before it your mechanic worked on it, there is a pretty good shot that he connected the plug wire incorrectly

The wire goes to the coil to plug. There are 2 plugs and 2 coils. One on top and one on bottom. Tried and it was worst then before. I dont think the dumb ass did anything with the wire or plugs because it was all old wire and plugs until I changed them last week-end. I talk to a mec and the said spray magic oil in the cyl and let sit for a day if it is locked up it might unlock. Also someone said the red lever by the carbs has something to do with timing if so mine is all the way forward does that mean anything. I do not want to touch it but giving all what is worng i thinking it cant hurt anymore then what has aready been done.

I honestly think that you have addressed so many different things on the motor that it will take someone that knows what they are doing to straigten it out. I would stay away from that so called mechanic if he thinks spraying magic oil in a cylinder will "unstick it" That really would be MAGIC! Shock

The thing is I am having a hard time finding someone that will work on a 85(more then 20yrs old and nobody will even look at). I am in Awendaw/Mt Pleasant. Do you know of anyone in this area with a good rep on old engines.

Start the motor, warm it up, mark where the red lever is, back it off a little bit at a time, and see if she smooth's out, if not, just move it back to the mark.

R and R I am not sure I know what that means CES. I feel like f...ing him up for the amount i have paid him. Learned never pay until you put in the water and test out.

The red lever is all the way forward. What does the lever do to the motor or carbs. Will do what you said but whould love to know what this lever does and what it is called?

Joey
Outboards are strange animals...
Back when I knew everything about everything, I screwed up royal a couple of 'em by tweaking this and adjusting that...I now know that I'm dumber than a rock when it comes to synchronizing all the components....
It taught me that there is nothing more valuable than finding a good, trustworthy mechanic...which is more difficult than finding a good trustworthy motor...
Some guys know how to do it...most of us don't.....Sad
I make sure that my mechanic get's a bottle of his favorite juice for the holidays...just in case I have to call him to fix my motivation.....
It sounds like your motors' good...but needs some TLC, from somebody that really knows what their doin"!
I'm not goin' out on a limb here...I've long since sawed it off....

Hi JoeyV,
You can also check to see if the wires are put together correctly. When I put new wires on my Evinrude they came dissassembled and I needed to put the wire into the rubber cap peice that connects to the plugs. Who knows maybe the mechanic didnt do it right?
