Lest anyone get more confused on the two different digital gauges Evinrude offers, one of which is not mentioned directly on the website not even in the ICON control section:

I-Command, made by Lowrance: http://www.evinrude.com/BRPHtml/evinr.../index.htm

ICON made by Faria, buried in a pdf brochure, not found in menu:http://shop.evinrude.com/media/docume...ochure.pdf

Joe,

Don't thank me, Larry posted the engine info over a month ago and member paddlepicker already has a 115 mounted on his Dauntless 160.

These new outboards are not all that attractive looking.

From a photograph seen on another site it appears Scout Boats is now shipping boats with the new E-tecs (G2) installed.

I'm an old traditionalist and believe Evinrudes should be white but the Red G2 looks pretty terrific on the Scout.

I am kinda liking the new look the more I see it. Really a drastic change from the norm. I hope it works. Heck of a risk. As the new style sells, then the wonderful early used motor styles will glut the market and give folks a chance with a good motor without bankrupting themselves. The maintenance profile they show compared with the other motors is impressive.

Looks are only in the eyes of the beholder.

I don't think everyone liked the looks of the first Boston Whaler either, or the first VW Beetle.

Looks don't mean much in the big scheme of things. Others might not like the look today but love it next week or next year.
Only time and sales will tell the story.

(EDIT: I have deleted some post that were not on topic. This discussion is about the new Evinrude and the new Evinrude motors only.)

I could care less what the engine color is or that it has interchangeable colored engine panels and accents.

I am keenly interested in all the technology the Evinrude E-Tec G2 has:

salt-water resistant fuel system, trim assist function, oil level and sight glass for the gear oil, indexed spark plugs, extra anodes, adjustable exhaust bleeds in the prop, inside the boat flushing hose under top cover, super quick and easy rigging, non-moving rigging hose when the engine turns and tilts, , 500 hr service interval or 5 years, 5 yr. corrosion warranty, titanium dioxide undercoating, low water pickups on nose cone gearcase, enclosed power steering and trim system, etc.

Not true. The published 214lb weight of the 40hp Yamaha is for a 15 inch short shaft model with no power trim. Same goes for the 216lb published weight of the Mercury. My Merc 40 weighs 233lbs, stamped right on the bracket. Yamaha would be 231 - 233 lbs. The Evinrude weighs 240 lbs for the 20 inch power trim model. It's published on the website and I've personally seen it stamped on numerous 40-60hp E-Tecs. So for a 7-9 lb difference you have a larger displacement, a larger gearcase, not to mention . . . all the 2 stroke benefits.

BTW, the 40 is not one of the new models.

I'm also a traditionalist and believe Evinrudes should be blue. Johnsons should be white. :)

Keep the faith, guys. I too shook my head when I first saw the G2, thinking E-Tecs already look great so why go mess with that aspect by hanging a bunch of extra plastic on the thing so it doesn't even look like an outboard. I could already hear the jokes that they look a snowmobile hanging azz-down on the transom. Now that I've seen that the look is largely influenced by the mechanicals, I'm withholding judgment. Personally, I think the ugly vantage point is from the helm looking back. They look like square robot heads with square earmuffs. The white ones look like Chrysler outboards. Regardless, it is a bold move by BRP and the real-world performance must make our jaws drop or the G2 may not survive.

Personally, I cannot wait to see real test results. I applaud BRP's commitment to bringing Evinrude back to its glory days of being #1 in the world (while under the leadership of engineering genius Charles Strang, who is still going strong today at age 90+).

inside the boat flushing

This might be the best thing, especially if you keep the boat on a lift. It's a real pain to access the flushing port hanging over the transom.

No more primer bulbs in the fuel line. The E-Tec G2 is a self-primer.

Does anyone know if Evinrude has fixed the biggest problem the E-Tecs have with this new "G2"? I am unable to find an answer anywhere.

The problem with the Gen1 E-tecs has always been threefold:
1) all voltage is regulated through EMM
2) the EMM is water-cooled, and commonly fails due to corrosion in saltwater use
3) the EMM costs about $1500 when it does fail.

Perhaps I have been mislead about this problem, but people believe this as fact and this is why we don't see a lot of those E-Tecs around here.
First, is there any truth to this description of the problem?
Second, if this is true, has it been corrected in the new G2 design?

I could not find any "internet data" to support this. Could you point me to some sources for this belief?

tmann,
To read up on the cooling of the EMM for the E-tecs try searching the heading of "EMM water cooling for E-tecs outboards". There is reference to what Silentpardner is discussing. It happens but obscure. Not just saltwater buildup but sand, sea weed, etc... I think it is on the discharge side of the system. The EMM will shut down the motor when it senses the heat itself (kinda a built in thermostat, similar to if it senses actual motor overheating) but the motor will be running at the correct temperatures. Happens but with proper flushing/cleaning techniques, rare. Not "commonly". If common, they would not have their "following".

I think people will come to like the new E-TEC design when they see how nice it looks disappearing into the spray ahead.

I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport.
