Wow.... that boat looks great! I am still amazed at how my whaler sat out in the weather, snow, wind, rain, ice, summer sun for over 5 years uncovered and uncared for. One good cleaning and my boat bounced right back. Even more amazing is how the gelcoats on these boats bounce right back also. It has taken me many years to nit pick on the coupounding process, it it come back great. The teak will also come back to new if preped and prepared. New battery new fuel line, maybe fuel tank and give that engine a good going over and you may have a many years of good running out of her. Take a lot of pictures, and after if you start to loose sight of how far the boat has come, look back at all the pictures. Its a very nice feeling. Your neighbor is a good man. Goodluck with it.

From what he told me he bought the boat new in 1985 used it for about 10 years 2-3 times a summer, then parked it in the driveway and has not used it since (last registered in 1997). He has all the original paperwork from the purchase. He mentioned that he has started the motor every other year. The steering appears to be frozen and he mentioned a piece of teak that is missing from the stern. Other than that it looks good (although my wife is not happy she thinks I dredged it up from the bottom of the lake). The motor looks great, almost new condition, but I have not tried to start it. He only has one of the 2 original fuel tanks.

I will take more suggestions for cleaning the boat. It was covered but the tarp ripped and there is actually moss growing on the floor. Most of the teak looks ok but also has some moss growth.

You might try pressure washing it to get the big stuff off and see what you are working with. Easy on the teak. There is lots of info on here about teak cleaning and care. I am guessing you scored a jewel and you might want to buy this guy a case of his favorite beverage!

you definitely owe the donor. sweet score. if you are down near Barnegat Bay give me a shout. Mine is a 1984, and though not perfect, plenty of people compliment a nice cleaned up classic montauk. Your wife will have renewed credibility in you once you've cleaned it up. Of course she may never tell you that.

Sorry guys,
I think you are wrong on this one. I think you should at the very least give him a 30 pack. But what exactly did you mean by "an older guy"? Please be more specific. We need more information. Age, height, weight.......................just kidding Joe.

Be sure to takes lots of before and after pictures from every angle. You are going to be pleasantly surprised when she emerges from that dirt cocoon. Also you get to tell your wife "I told you it was going be a beautiful boat!" Smile

I was just cruising through the site looking for new, or old stuff to read, and I stumbled across your story and how awesome it is. Your excitement and curiosity makes it so you can't think straight. Someone says to you " hey do you want a boat?" YES, wait what kind of boat? Yes I would love a boat
! You want to give me your boat! Are you kidding? Thats incredible.

See my boss and i were talking about a job over phone on a Friday afternoon and out of the blue he says " do you want a boat" holy &@%$. He gave me his 1999 18 foot Dauntless. So I know how you feel and I'm glad things like this do happen.

Boy. I recently read an article from some news outlet about the most charitable people (by state) and the NE corridor of the US ranked as the least charitable per capita. Both of these reports of people receiving gifts of free boats come from NE or Eastern Seaboard states. There goes that theory!

Congrats on the freebies!

Dave

Good one.
We all like a good joke.

That's sorta like the bumper sticker someone gave me a few years back.
"Will work for Sex".

Maybe a good name for a boat? Smile

That would be a good name, but I don't think my wife would go for that one either! Then the questions from my two young boys! Not ready for that! Wink
