well I tried starting one of the Yamahas today so I can winterize. But it just cranked,never fired? I dont know where the choke is,I have no manuals? So its guesswork? Kinda sucks. Anyone familiar with the twin motors on an 83 Outrage? What are the switches,where is the choke,nav lights,running lights,anchor light?
Any help or advice would help.

OK Jerry........you are the most excited New Whaler owner I've seen yet and it is fantastic to see your excitement! First of all you seem to be bouncing all over the place with your project.........Make a list and then tackle each one before moving on to the next...........Now for the motors...........you can go on EBAY and probably find a service manual for your motor or get one online somewhere else.............Then read the manual and learn the basics of your motors..............just do a step at a time and you'll be surprised at the things you will be able to do Grin By the way, when are we going to see some pictures?

First, pump the bulb(s) and make sure the bulb is hard and the engine is getting fuel.

Second, many key switches have a push to choke. Meaning, you push the key in while turning the key to crank the engine. If it doesn't have a push to choke key, then you must have a manual choke switch somewhere on the dash.

Yeah,I am pretty excited and also impatient,I like to get projects going early ,so I can be sure I dont run out of time and optimize the amount of enjoyment afforded me when i finish the project.
I had a 98 Dauntless with the push to choke ignition switch, I have the shop manual and cd fot the motors,but nowhere does it illustrate what or where the choke would be,and I dont feel too comfortable just guessing,so I thought mabey someone here had a similar setup and could steer me in the right direction. As for the pics,Rob resized them for me all I need to do is post them to my personal page.

No these motors are 87's and I already have the manual and cd,it just dosent lay ouut the basic starting procedure. Thanks for looking thoughWink

Maybe I missed it, but what HP are the engines? You should have a choke switch for each, and I assume the switch whatever they are will look the same.

If the choke is not built into the key, it could be a small toggle switch of sorts somewhere on the dash.

My suggestion would be to remove the engine covers and put the key in the on postion. From here you can begin to flip switches and note what switch operates what. When you find a switch that seemingly operates nothing obvious listen carefully as you switch it on and off. You may here a click noise coming from your engine, that could be your choke activating. If you had a second set of eyes they could look at the carb and note if they see the choke move.

Last but not least with the engine covers off, and the carb air intake expossed you should be able to see the choke butteryfly in the beginning of the carb throat. Once you find this you could follow the linkage back and see what it leads to.

Hope you get to the bottom of this!

I think everyone here has a similar setup as you Jerry.
I had a 20' Outrage with a Yamaha 200 on the back. and another Whaler with a Merc which is very much the same a Yamaha.

Don't cut people short.
Have you even tried to push the key in? That should tell you immediately whether or not it is built into the key switch.

Many of the newer motors (1984 and newer) no longer used the butterfly for choke. Even though they called it a choke, it really isn't. It is actually a primer which injects fuel directly into the carbs without the need to close the butterfly.

I didnt mean to offend anyone or cut anyone short.,it wasent my intention. I guess I should have started with,I pumped the bulbs in the fuel lines(3 times and they were firm),I put the key in the ignition,tried to push it in,when it didnt piston in or out,I increased the idle speed while in neutral, I turned the key and cranked the motor for say 7-10 seconds for about 5 cycles.I went and pulled the manual and CD but found no helpful info. Then searched this forum for any pics of a similar setup with hopefully labels under the choke switch,but couldnt find anything,so I started this post.

I was hopeing for a simple response like,try the toggle switches under the ignition switches,thats where they were on my boat?

As I previously stated I previously owned a 98 Dauntless with the push to choke ignition switch ,so it was the first thing I tried.
WhalerDan the battery for one motor is dead and one is fully charged ,it cranked the motor very easily. So thats the motor I was hopeing to start. Thanks for the input.

drandlett,the motors are 70's,I did try listening for the choke working with the only toggle swithc that seemed obvious to me ,but I heard nothing.I dont think I flooded the mooes either since that usually produces a pretty strong gas odor. Thanks for the input.

Ill try again when I get a break this weekend.Thanks for helping me figure out this new setup.

Hi there, I have a similar setup, but with twin Yamaha Pro 50's. Just a thought: Since it sounds like the previous owner may have neglected her awhile, did you change the fuel filters? On my Outrage I have a filter/water sperator, but inside each motor there is a small inline filter.Check these out. They may look good, but they may still be bad.
Also check all your fuel lines: like mine they were not rated for the new fuels of today. Last, you may have gummed up carbs. If this is a fuel problem, you can try this: spray a VERY SMALL amount of starter fluid in each cyl. If it fires up for a second or two, you have a fuel problem. If it doesn't, start looking into you ignition system.

PS, When I said to use a very small amt of start fluid, that's because all you want to do is see the motor will kick over. Use too much and you can get run-on/detonation.

One thought.............are the kill switch lanyards fully engaged? The older motors will not start if they are not securely in place

I ws going to ask about the lanyards? My last boat had one and it was obvious where it went,in the slot/groove directly the below the ignition switch. I couldnt find where they went on the new boat. This sounds like the problem,since I did check the fuel filters under the motor cover. Thanks for the input.

My 1993 40HP Yami has a manual pull choke lever AND a toggle switch uner the key on the throttle control.

Jerry,

A standard Yamaha ignition looks like this (below) There is the key switch, choke and safety lanyard.

The key does not include the choke function. The toggle switch is the choke. To use, lift.

Most 2 stroke motors have a unique cold starting procedure. It could be:

Turn key and hold choke switch up for a 3 count, release choke. Stop turning over. Repeat up to 5 times. If you hear the engine fire, even for a second do not choke again. You will flood it. Just turn the key.

Another technique is to put throttle in neutral and advance it 20 degrees. For a Yamaha top mount binnacle, push the rubber center cap and push the throttle forward a bit. Turn the key. Repeat. If she fires and stalls, reduce throttle back to neutral and use the key only.

What key switch do you have? Attach a photo please.

What starting steps have you tried?

I'm really not trying to be a smart ass here, but from what you have asked about your "new" boat and motors so far, you might consider taking it to someone to have it all gone over with you, before you break something.
You have lots of time, spring is 6 months away.

Your motors probably have conventional chokes, and you should be able to here them close when turn and push the key into the ignition.
