130 Sport Slow to Plane

When it finally gets to plane all is good. it has the stock 40hp 4 stroke Merc. Is this normal. Years ago I had a new 1972 13ft with a 40hp Merc. She would get up and go...Any Ideas??

I'll share another thought with you that may help. My 130 Sport planes fine with my family of four on board. However, my family of four weighs a total of 360 lbs. I could see where the boat might struggle to get on plane if the weight of the persons on board exceeded, say, 450 lbs. With only 40hp, add'l weight makes a HUGE difference. Have you run the boat wide open and trimmed out yet? If so, what kind of speed (GPS) and rpms are you seeing? I suppose there could be a problem with your motor. Member Posts: 11 Comments: 0 Joined: 09/05/08	2 adults both at 200lbs (total 400) GPS has me at 38MPH 5500 RPM. Just talked to the dealer and he will change the prop to a 13 or 14 and put a Whale tale on free of charge. I will check it out monday

Member Posts: 194 Comments: 0 Joined: 05/11/08	Well, assuming your GPS is right (it most likely is), that explains your problem. While the prop may be stamped as a 14p, it's not a 14p. At 5500 rpms, you should be running 32.5 to 33 mph. If you're truly running 38mph at 5500 rpms, your prop has an effective pitch in excess of 16". Any chance you were running downstream in a 5 mph current? By the way, I moved my motor up 1 hole and it works great. My boat ran good with a 10-3/8" prop that is 14 pitch if you only have about 400 lbs or less in people on board. When I loaded it with more weight it would not plane at all. I tried alot of things and ended up with a 13 pitch prop (same diameter). I also found that the motor required raising to get the best performance. I can run with 3 bigger adults with that setup and get a decent plane out of it. The boat did about 32 mph with two on board and the 14 pitch prop. Pitch and diameter are both important. I'm thinking of trying a 12 pitch prop for times when I really load down the boat.

Member Posts: 11 Comments: 0 Joined: 09/05/08	went to the dealer today and he wanted to start with a Whale tail. Crap! all is solved, the boat jumps out of the water...Left the 14P on the boat. Top end appears to be the same. Should also help my fuel usage, not having to dig out of a hole.
