Here's the latest drug runner from some European nuts.
This thing belts across the English channel 3 times per week and was
just a blur on the radar of the British coast guard.
They were so blown away by the speed of the thing that they brought in a
specialized chopper to catch it !!!

Every time I see that image I think of all the ways to much more efficiently create 2000 hp other than eight outboards.

Here is the story and other images

I looked it up after seeing the pictures. Here is more about the boat and manufacturer:

Insane Drug Boat

Claims to run 60 knots (around 70mph) and burn 900 liters (around 238 gallons) of fuel per hour at full throttle. Shock

Seems the builders have come into some trouble for selling to known criminals or building boats intended for illegal purposes. Reported that the boats are not all about speed but speed while carrying large loads.

I thought it was a hoax when I first saw it too, but if you read the story background and look at the other photos, especially the one showing in running in the water, that would be pretty hard to alter. Also if you look at the closeup photos taken from rear, you can see different markings, scratches, etc on each motor. If it is photoshop, then someone has a great talent......Would be interesting to find out the truth

Seen it about two years ago......hard to passs this thing off as anything else but for something illegal. 70MPH isn't too bad either.

I am wondering if the port bank of four has counter rotation drives?Wink
For the kind of obvious attention that this set up would bring, I think that flying just above the waves with a hovercraft would have been smarter, and not uncommon.

One would think that they would throw a match on it after making the crossing (How the Hell are you going to hide something like that), cost of doing business, not a good way to try and out run authorities, no matter how fast something is, it's never fast enough to out run a radio.

I guess they look at it from the stand point that if they make one run they cover all expenses for a long time and the bonus trips are pure $$$$$$$$$$$$ in their pockets. Not sure they are real concerned about losing the boat or finding a more efficient way to run drugs...... Probably have the same system there we have............arrest them..........they post bail..............they get out.............they are never seen again............until the get busted again...............meanwhile the cash is being stockpiled..............Regardless, wouldn't you love to be able to board it to see how it is rigged! The Coast Guard has just about put an end to drug smuggling by boat or airplane into South and Southwest Florida in recent years. A boat like that wouldn`t get very far. Back in the `70`s were the drug heydays, with Columbian ships sitting 50-100 miles offshore and offloading pot into shrimp boats, which then offloaded again near shore into mullet skiffs. and brought to shore. It wasn`t unusual to see a bale of pot (square grouper) that fell off a boat floating unattended out in the Gulf while fishing. Some folks would pick it up for there own use, some would call the CG and give them loran coordinates and some would let it just float on buy. Thats all history now, But it made many commercial fishermen very rich. Many went to prison for income tax evasion. They had no way to explain their sudden wealth. I understand some are still at it now, especially since the gill netting ban, but they bring it in from S. Texas in pickup trucks. Not as romantic. and not tolerated, any more.

Rich, I grew up in South Florida in Pompano beach and it wasn't uncommon to see a few "Square grouper" on or near the beach early in the morning. Funny you should mention that term, I haven't heard it used in years.

Good story.

That pic has been floating around for a looong time. The weight alone will keep the speed way down. A pair of T-53 Lycomings would be much more suitable.
