Hard to say if 'Preflight' will be finished by then, but if it is I'll do my best to be there!

I'm thinking about joining - I have 2 questions...

Is this suitable for a 13 Whaler?
Can this be done as a day trip from southern NJ?

I'd say both are possible on a good day but I hope someone with more experience will respond.

That seems like one hell of a day trip so you might concider finding a room.

This trip seems like a great idea and I am very much looking forward to it.

If I could find a campground I could come up with my Motorhome. The only problem would be launching the Whaler. I would need someone to drop it in for me. There is no way I'm backing my 36 Foot class A down the ramp. Shock

I've heard of a launch ramp near the G.W.B. haven't seen it, I'm a 2 hour boat ride from the city and may opt to trailer to a closer location. Any thoughts on a convenient venue for all ? This should be fun! If we come up with a common launch/meeting location launching will not be an issue for anyone.

Is there a boat ramp at Liberty Park? If so, that would be a good place to launch so nobody is driving through the city with a trailer.
Scott, if I can make it I'll be happy to launch your boat for you. I won't be able to give a definate answer until pretty close to the event though (because of the boat and my job ). If I can't make it by boat I'll TRY to arrange for some overhead photos from my 'occupational vehicle'... Look for something loud and bright orange!

Would that be a Coast Guard Helicopter?

And thanks for the offer. Lets play it by ear as it gets closer.

I would'nt go through "Hell Gate" in a 15 footer, that RR bridge is one creepy place ! especially at the wrong tide when all of L.I. sound empty's into it. maybe if we bypassed "Hell Gate" I'd go, we don't have to go through "Hell gate" do we ?

I looked at the map and see no reason to go past hells gate on the way around Manhattan.
I hope you make it MW.

Hells Gate with the tide in your favor is of no concern, even with it not in your favor your in a Whaler ! I'm more concerned with the natives tossing items off the bridges. Either way it's interesting.

I know there is a public ramp near the Marine Parkway bridge in the "Rockaways" (closest one I know of), we could launch there (Jamaica Bay) and go out of "Rockaway Inlet" but, "Staten Island" would be closer, It's a bit west past my normal area of operation, I'll check around for other Ramps, one closer would be better, maybe a trip to Jones beach or somewhere else would be a good trip, and more protection (Barrier beaches) for us Little 13's and 15 foot model's, I'm not sure if I can run with the "BIG DOG's" out the inlet but, it sure would be a blast if we could get everyone together.

On the NJ side there are several ramps, GWB has ramp and parking. In Nyack NY, there is also has a ramp. Nyack had a permit requirement. You will need to call. Last time I launched from Nyack, there was a someone collecting fees.

I believe there is one liberty state park, in Jersey City, but not sure.

There was a also a ramp near the Meadow Lands that leads to the Newark Bay, open to the Hudson, That is a bit of a ride itself, and not the most scenic.

Hells gate is a creepy place, with tide against you and huge wakes reverberating off the sea walls makes this a place to avoid even in whaler.

Something to note on windy day lower Manhattan as well as the wider sections of that river can get a bit rough and wet... Particularly if it is a busy weekend.

I grew up in Brooklyn and I'm very familiar with the area. I think a " staging area" needs to be decided so people can decide if they are going to cruise or trailer to the area. I would be coming from upstate so I would definately trailer my boat. If you contact some marinas in the area we might be able to get a group rate on the ramp. New Jersey or Staten Island may be the best spot. You come right out into New York harbor off the Statue of Liberty. I'm in if it's a good weekend for me. ChrisG.
