I've been busy in between fishing trips building molds for a model Whaler. I chose a 1984 Montauk because I came across some nice pictures of one sanded down and I was able to finally get a handle on the bottom geometry. I have yet to model the console, and I still want to add a couple of details, such as the sump and the normam pin, but the first shot came out well with no damage to either the molds or the hull. It is in 1:17.5 scale, which is odd I know, but it fit the stock I had on hand. I started with a wooden model and then made molds from casting urethane The test shot I took was also plain urethane, but the next and susequent models will likely be gel coat filled with urethane. Not sure yet if I want to model an enine or not, but I have already located railing stock in 316 stainless, so it will have the full compliment of railings.

My intentions are to make one for myself and then sell copies until the mold breaks. Price will depend on how much more money goes into the tooling and how much detail/hand finishing each model takes.

The boat yard in my garage is beginning to take shape. I've been experimenting with bending and soldering the railings and have made a jig so I can make duplicates. I have made a console mold and started to make some of the mahogany covers for the bow locker and the console. Overall, I'm pretty happy about how all of this is coming out. I just poured my 6th hull and another set of console molds and thought I'd take a minute and update everyone on where I am. I've decided to make a small run of six models to completion. One of them belongs to my helper, Erik Selis for his incredible patience with by barage of sketches and questions. Another will go to Whaler to see if they have any interest in them. One I'll keep, and the other two will probably go on ebay to market test them. After these, I'm going to try one with a gel coat surface and a lightweight urethane core. The way the mold is parted, I can even do a blue interior if I want to! That is, of course, if I don't destroy the mold in the process. Anyway, here are two new pictures to preview... Roy those are looking great. I would love to get one. Also, I have the name of a great model builder and detailer in Ferndale that has a laser cutter and other highly detailed machines for doing this type of work. He is also fairly cheap. His guys could do the railings, the consoles, and the plexi windscreens.

His Name is Dean Zoyes and he owns Zoyes East Model builders.
Here is their website.

If you contact Dean and let him know Jeff Rohlfing from GPJ gave you the his info.

I'm getting close to doing final assembly on my first run of models and I could really use the real McCoy to make sure I get everything placed right. Anybody local with a mid 1980's Montauk that would like to show off your boat? I am in White Lake, Michigan (just West of Pontiac). I only need a few minutes with your pride and joy to take a measurement or two and a couple of photos. Email me at live4ichthus-whaler@sbcglobal.net.

Here's a couple photos of where I'm at on this project. I have six copies more or less to this level and I'm ready to start gluing consoles and seats down.

I have sold one on Ebay and although it went for a tad less than I'd hoped, I feel pretty good about it overall. There were 36 "watchers" on my auction! I think Ebay is going to be how I want to go with the other three I have available. I will offer a "buy it now" feature for $150 for anyone who doesn't want to bid and just purchase one outright, but I don't want to choose who gets one and who doesn't. if this is something that interests you, then email me and I'll send you a note when I list them.

I haven't decided yet if I want to make another edition or not, although the interest seems to be pretty strong. My price may seem high, but consider that I have nearly $300 invested in tooling that will only last for a limited number of hulls. I have also paid for all of the materials up-front and they are not cheap.

Several have asked if I have any other models coming, and the answer is maybe. I'd like to do a 13 Sport, a smirkless 16, and of course my own boat, a 17 Outrage, but I also have other projects going in my shop (mostly furniture) so I'm in no hurry. If I could lay my hands on an actual drawing, I would definitely do another one.
