Regarding Mercury Optimax, I doubt if you will beat this RIGGED pricing (or for any brand you listed), $6700 for 75 HP and $7100 for 90 HP. And then there is an additional rebate given. See this website in TN:
http://www.jacosmarine.com/mercuryeng.../index.cfm
With the free rigging special until Nov 30, it could be worth a 6 hour road trip up there. Or you can beat the considerable sales tax and have one shipped to a shop near you for about $120. and have the shop install it for you on an hourly basis.
I have bought from them - they are a reputable operation and one of Mercury's largest dealers. The pricing is exceptionally low. Great pricing on Mercury propellers also.

$10,900 Rigged with sea trial
Merc 90 4s (Dec 2012) I pulled the Jaco discount on the dealer here...didn't work, that price includes $1,100 in Smartcraft gauges, rigging, new binnacle, cables, umbilical, sending unit for fuel tank, Verado key assembly and 7% tax. Send me email, I give you contact, Tampa Bay.

Finnegan, that sounds like a once in a lifetime sale, amazing. I am getting deployed soon an will likeky have the money after that, considering I get family seperation pay, hazard duty pay, an tax free.
If i had the money now id spring for an efi 4stroke. No more carbs for me.
I didnt even know a deal like that existed.
Am i missing something? I read the site. Does that include binnacle mount? Harness. Everything to make the engine run?
An after reading those prices the price of the next post seems a bit high, but that may be the average US price.

Jaco's website indicates parts are extra. The binnacle control is about $275, throttle/shift cables about $100, and key switch ignition harness about $160. For gauges, it depends on what you want.
You can see their prop prices if you want a Merc prop.
So add about $550 for controls, plus gauges and prop as desired. It's still some of the best pricing you will find anywhere.

E-TEC 90, salt water version, $9500 after $1000 for my old 1984 yamaha 90 2 stroke. Included rigging, binnacle mount, new steering cable and gas line and I-Command gauge. I provided the prop separately. The special running at the time, last April, included a five year warranty. That was in Grand Rapids, MI.
I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport. |

I think $10,500 is lot to pay for any 90HP outboard installed. That is getting close to what a 150HP 4-stroke would cost installed. Are 2-stroke Evinrudes really that costly?

There was a guy here that just re-powered with a Tohatsu 90hp 2 stroke that was "pretty light" at 337 pounds.
They won't sell them without rigging them and set up complete out the door is $8700ish.
I will be looking at the heavier Merc for $7100 plus parts/prop/rigging/shipping, but the Tohatsu should be on the short list.

I am the guy that just re powered with a 90 HP Tohatsu Nissan. Cost was $8700 plus some extra rigging as I changed a few things such as dash plate and staring cable. $8700 includes prop, binicle controlled, cables, guages, fuel water sep. Plus a few extras

I have a 1984 17 Montauk as well and I just got an unbelievable deal on Suzuki 2003 140hp. I was going to have somebody install it for me, but after thinking about it, I decided to get a shop crane from Harbor Freight and do it myself. I am no expert by any means and it was the first time I had done this, but with the jack plate and the appropriate manuals, I was successful. It was sometimes a pain, but overall, very easy and doable for anybody with a modicum of basic skills.
Before anybody comments on the majorly overpowered hull, the weight of this particular Suzuki is 420 lbs, only slightly above the 395-405 lbs that the Etec 115 weighs. I have no interest in top speed, I just wanted a reliable engine and I found this deal, so I'm giving it a try. Insurance I don't carry anyways, and again, I'm not out for super performance, just reliability. I ran the engine on the muffs today and everything works great, sea trials a bit later today. I will post photos of my experience, including static and dynamic pics of hull in the water with this engine. I am VERY cautious with my boats...
Bottom line, the rigging is not rocket science and easily accomplished, so I would recommend saving one to three thousand dollars and doing it yourself. It took me about a two weeks of part time poking around to finish up.

Most dealers will not sell engines that are not tiller steer models with out rigging them. I think there are many reasons for this, some are valid and some are not. Bottom line is that if the O.P. wants a NEW engine he will most likely have to have it rigged by the person that sells it to him. As for how hard it is to rig an engine I would say it is not that hard, but the point is most will and need the service of the shop who sold it to them. As far as your "great deal" on a 140hp that is a personal matter, as you never even stated a price that you paid. But I think for most people even if a 140hp outboard was free, it is not what most want on the back of their 17 Montuak. I always say you can go broke on bargains so the best deal for you may not be the price that others will pay in the market place. Have fun and be safe with your 140hp.

vitobill,
sounds great, looking forward to some pics, and seeing the performance numbers, i have thought about that, because i was looking for a used motor due to price, some manufactures says they wont warrant a product unless it is installed by a certified dealer for that brand, but besides that, looking forward to your repost.
BSG, if I was given a 140hp outboard an weight an ful economy was around 3.5mpg, even 2.5mpg, if I was given it, I would throw it on the back on my 1966 custom 16'.
And I run it WOT, I had a 150 on my 1996 outrage II 17ft, an they are different boats, but I go max power if I can afford it, if its free, I can afford it. Im also the guy that takes his brother 130 sport 20 miles offshore in fort lauderdale florida, dolphin fishing, king fishing, looking for the gulf stream for any pelagic species.

jw0287,
I'm still figuring out how to do pics on my personal page, so be patient with me. With respect to the price I paid ($3,000 for a 200hr engine that was in storage), I didn't post that because I bought it off a relative, so I kinda had an "in", and it would probably be unrealistic to expect that kind of price, say, on ebay or craigslist.
I just finished sea trials this afternoon, and my oh my, how I was pleasantly surprised! The transom, at least for now, handles it without a sweat and the way the boat sits in the water at rest does not bely the motors weight. I didn't push it to the max today, but at about 4500 rpm, the speed was easily 38-40mph (no speedo). There was some porpoising present at the higher rpms, but nothing too crazy. I only have to make an adjustment with the height on the jackplate, as it's a motor with a 25" lower leg and though the jackplate lifts the engine around 4 inches, it needs to go up one hole on the jackplate. It's kicking up a big rooster tail but otherwise runs fine. The boat handles just fine, but I wouldn't want to take a sharp turn with it at 45mph!
Check my personal page later tonight or tomorrow and you should be able to see the pics my son and I took of the boat when it was in the water.... I can say this Suzuki is an incredible engine...very quiet, gobs of torque (esp. on this light hull!), and it started right up after being in storage for about 4-5 years! Suzuki has a promotion now that extends the warranty for 6 years IF you buy new from a dealer.
As an aside, go to "www.boats.net" and they give you prices for "engine only" on Mercs, Yamahas, Hondas, and Tohatsus (but not Etecs), so it can give you a good comparison between manufacturers. If you're looking for weights only, go to "www.nadaguides.com" and look under the "boats" section and they give weights for ALL outboards since the 1990s or so. It's a useful reference!
Good luck!

vitobill thanks for the info,
off the top of my head, your boat is a 20inch transom, combine that witha lot of reading on getting motors higher up out of the watere for less drag, you can probably pull even more speed out of it,
if u have a cell phone with an app store an gps function, (almost every android or new apple product) u can download a free gps app like speed view. an get a good idea of the speed your going.
also, Joe has you beat with the engine weights,
Whaler central is full of useful information, I can't always find it, but Joe constantly steers us in the right direction,
thanks Joe!

25" shaft motor is the wrong motor for your 17" whaler. The spray in your pictures is because the motor is mounted way too low. The porpoising is because of the motor height as well. With the jackplate and set back you will need about 8" of lift to get the cavatation plate out of the water.

Thanks Dave...after some more research, that's the conclusion I came to. It's my first time doing something like this and when I take the boat out for the winter, I'm going to do some tweaking. I know it's the wrong engine for the transom, but I'll put my own time into it to try and make some adjustments. If it doesn't work out in the end, there may be a nice low hour Suzuki on the market! We'll see....
