So I am outside this morning cleaning my Boston Whaler 13. This older guy stops by while walking his dog and asks me if I want a FREE boat. I ask what he has and he tells me its a 1985 Boston Whaler 17 Montauk. He tells me he bought it new but it needs a lot of work. I drive over and look and it is all there...has its original 1985 Evinrude 70 that looks NEW. I look it over and its all there..just mossy.....even has a front removable fishing seat. I could not get the tires on the trailer fast enough. So now I have a Montauk 17 cc sitting in the driveway next to my 13......

I can't be happier.....This Montauk has a fishing seat mounted up front. The original owner said he was told by the dealer it was a rare option. Does anyone else have it? Its removable so I was thinking of taking it out and looking for a cushion for the bow.

Just curious...

In your post above you listed it as a Montauk 17'.....
When you listed it in your profile, you selected Montauk 170....
Why?

Which is it, as the two models are completely different with completely different hulls.

Are you sure the year is correct then?
The Montauk 170 was not made until 2002....

Please let us know why you and so many other people select the Montauk 170 when it is clearly a Montauk 17' if it is a 1985 model....

That certainly is a lenghty questions...the answer is not nearly as lenghty...I simply made a mistake. I thought that I was selecting the length. You caught me I am not a Boston Whaler guru.

Just curious as to why so many people select the wrong model.

Just for a heads up, 170 is not a length, it is a model number like Ford F250, Chevy 2500, etc....

Mistakes happen.....

DISCLAIMER:
I am not picking on you... I am just trying to figure out why so many people make the same mistake...

It's easy to do when it's not well known to people outside of the Whaler community, or to those that are new to it, that Whaler changed how they represented their lengths and models a few years ago.

Very nice score there NJmedic and I sure can understand you might need a Chill Pill! Just be sure to drop the guy a few fresh caught fish when you get it floating or if he wants to, take him fishing.

Joe has spanked many of us at one time or another for our mistaken identities but as you get to know your BW boats you will find there is good reason to ID a boat correctly. My similar score from a couple years ago is still a work in progress but slowly taking shape and getting closer to a Maiden Cruise that should happen this summer.

Clean that gift up and snap some pics for your Personal Page so we can all do a little drooling with you. I will bet there is a 13 footer coming on the sale market pretty soon!

Good luck and great Karma so pass it along to another.

A little clean up and I bet it will look great...

What work does it need besides cleaning and getting the engine going again?

You may find a real beauty of a boat after it is cleaned and polished.

WOW! Simple Green, Elbow Grease and some Teak oil and polish and it should be looking great in no time.

Go read the current discussion about bent rails. Mine had the exact same bow in the rail as yours and it was a simple fix.

Wow! You have to do something for the guy who gave it to you. Wake up that motor properly and it may last you a long time if nothing wrong with it. Lube the cylinders turn it over by hand clean the carb get it running and change the water pump and gear oil. Do you know when it was last used?
