I have a 13ft and with the removable decks getting some new custom rails, I can hold up to 12 rods(4 front & 8 rear). I think it's good to have options on what side, end or both to fish from.

I think that is one reason I like Whalers so much. THey have plenty of rail space. I believe you can't have too many rod holders. BG

Never too many.

Rod Holders are old school. You need a set of these.

depends on what kind of fishing you are doing. As far as old school, seems like everybody is trying to make a better mouse trap only to find that simple things will still get the job done.

4 S/S "Rocket Launchers" on the rails, rear 2 are angled out for trolling.

4 S/S Rocket Launchers - sides angled out, rear angled back. Plus the 6 OEM holders on the console, 2 of which have been used to run planers.

There are 18 on my Outrage 18'

That averages out to be one rod holder per foot.

Put as many rods that you can fit. You know you have too many when you spend more time untangling the lines.

BTW - Is that a Red Drum in your avatar? I just caught 7 a few weeks ago in the Chesapeake Bay and all were over 36" and we couldn't keep any because they were too big. The largest was 48" and weighed in around 45lbs. Good fighting fish!

The more the better. I recently went fishing with four people in my Dauntless, and every rod holder was used- May need a couple more!

E_Digg- That is a Red Drum in my avatar. Caught in Panama City Beach Florida. It was 39 inches long. Great fighting fish- goes straight to the bottom, like a striper.

I have 14 on my Montauk. I troll the Chesapeake Bay with planner boards and can run that many rods.

The 4 on my Newport is not nearly enough, never get close to using the 18 on the Hydrasport. Somewhere in the middle lies the answer.

Reminds me of " how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop?"

Are we counting the rod butt wedged in the side rails? That adds a few more.

I think I use my clamp on rod holders more for tieing dock lines than for fishing poles. They come in handy for the quick tie up at a gas dock or whatever. If that makes sense.
