pbalser,

Welcome to WhalerCentral.

That is a beautiful 13' Whaler you have.
I have never seen a steering connector quite like that before. Can you tell us more about this style?

pbalser,

GREAT Boat.

What is the year?

Is that boat from your childhood?

Is the boat in it's original finish or has it been redone?

Was is painted or gelcoated if refinished?

Any pictures of the refurb?

You have really got yourself a beautiful work of art. I am in the process of refurbing a 1979 15' Sport and as you well know, it is a lot of work, but so far probably one of the most relaxing and satisfying projects that I have ever undertaken. I made up my mind not to rush anything and so far I am on the 14th coat of varnish and hand sanding on the new teak with 6 more to go before I'm finished. I simply cannot wait to show it off to others who will appreciate it. I hope mine turns out as nice as yours. Pfft You have done a great job that you should be extremely proud of.
Thanks for sharing it with us

thanks to all for the kind words. to answer the questions - no, I had one as a kid, but stupidly sold it. that was the motivation to find another "blue liner" 13 ft whaler for my sons. the restoration took the better part of two years, with a full sand/new glass skin/fair/imron for the outside, and a sand/fair/repaint of the interior too. I had the wood done by a person on continuouswave, who has gone out of business. getting 5/4 mahogany milled is almost impossible. T & R marine made the steering bracket, and was hugely helpful in fabricating a semi-custom unit. Boats, Inc in niantic, ct did the motor install and electric wiring. they saw this as a labor of love, and went above and beyond.....
the hull, according to BW, was built in 1965, and sold to a dealer in delaware. I found it in barnegat, nj, and bought it sight unseen.
my two sons, (6 & 4), know that the boat is theirs, and chase me incessantly for more time on the water. I am relegated to sitting on the bow, and watching them "gas-ass" around the bay. amazing thing - kids NEVER get bored of playing with boats...... Again, thanks for all the kind words.

I am in the process of restoring a 1966 13' ft classic Whaler myself. Do you have any pictures of the restoration while you were doing it? I decided to gel coat the interior white with the classic whaler blue splatter design throughout the interior. I know it's not original but I think it will look good. Once the restoration is complete, I will post some "before and after" pictures. I've completely refurbished the 30 year old trailer and though it looks like new, I probably would have saved a little money had I just went out and bought a new one. But hey, what the heck....I had a great time working on it. I have a 1991 40HP Yamaha ready to hang on the back of the Whaler in a few weeks.
