I have a 1986 Montauk 17 and the trim switch on the throttle appears to be dead. Nothing happens, no sound, nothing when I press the switch up or down. How does one get the throttle handle off to check the connections to the trim switch? It doesn't have a set screw, and I tried unscrewing it, but it wouldn't budge. Do I just need to try harder? Thanks for your help.

I'm a novice at this "hole in the water" stuff so any help at diagnosing this problem would be helpful.

I'm also a new member here and just spent about an hour reviewing all the posts. Lots of great help but I didn't see anything this basic.

Need to know what year, size, and model of your motor and the brand of control you have. Boston Whaler factory did not install engines in the Classic days.

They may have installed controls but that was an option and the brand was not Boston Whaler.

It's a 1985 Mercury 90EL.

Very good.
Quicksilver is a brand of Mercury.

So you have a Quicksilver Mercury single engine control box.

Unfortunately Mercury is not my forte... Maybe some of the Merc gurus here can help you.

I'm not sure if my original control is Quicksilver or Morse, but I did have to repair the tilt switch. I have a '93 Merc 60 so similar vintage as yours. The tilt switch is a toggle that is mounted in the top of the handle. Instead of trying to remove the handle, you might check to see if you can just pull the switch out.

The cover plate on mine pops out with a pocket knife, then the switch pulls out with light pressure and is designed to be pried apart and snapped back together.

All it needed was a good cleaning of the contacts and it works fine now. HTH
