Am replacing the fuse holder that supplies my bilge pump. Was new last season and I had it inside the battery box. Could have just been a defective one, but it corroded on me towards the end of the season and caused problems. Am wondering if this may have been from battery gasses while charging and I should locate it outside the box this time, or is inside the box better and that was just a fluke?

Mine has been outside and haven't had any problems yet that I know of.

While I think it may be a fluke, I would have it outside the battery box.

Dave, the acidic vapors from your battery could have caused pre-mature corrosion on your fuse holder. Many times a battery box doesn't provide enough air circulation around the battery and the vapors just sit in there....corroding components.

I agree with Cliff in that the majority of time there is a lot of moisture inside the battery box. Open it on a humid day and you'll surprised at the amount of mositure and droplets collected on and around the battery. I'd say leave it out.

I have my fuse holder inside the box near the top with a cable tie, solder the holder in, "liquid lectric tape" the connections, smear some "Die-lectric" grease in there before you put the fuse in. Waterproof (ha-ha) fuse holder's don't last all that long because, moisture always get's in, I notice the problem's start when you go to replace the fuse (they won't come out unless you break them out from corrosion), then ya get to buy another in-line fuse holder for $6.99 @ "Theft Marine" (West marine). My boat is moored uncovered (except for the seat), so if I get 2 season's out of a "Rule" 500 gph bilge pump and in-line fuse holder, I'm doing "GREAT" !
