1984 13 ft Boston Whaler, Salt water Florida boat, when you accidentaly wipe the dry hull with your hand the dark blue bottom paint comes off on your hand. I was cleaning the gel coat above the water line, and some accidently got on the bottom paint and it really came off, however I noted that there was still paint remaining after the simple green error. This is not the original bottom paint, and Paint is a dull flat dark blue. Is this some salt water regulated bottom paint, or just some cheap automotive primer?
Maybe this will help explain it.
Ablative Antifouling Paint:
Ablative paint is a soft bottom paint that is designed to wear away as your boat is used. As the water moving over the boat's surface wears away the paint, fresh layers of biocide are continuously exposed, so that the anti-fouling characteristic is constantly refreshed as long as some of the paint remains on the boat's hull. Ablative antifouling paints can be applied over other antifouling paints, so that you don't need to remove the previous paint before applying a fresh coat. It can be useful to apply 2 or 3 coats when applying an ablative antifouling paint. Ablative paints work well in marine environments with high levels of marine growth.
The drawback to ablative paints is that, because it's such a soft paint, you will remove some of the paint whenever you scrub down the hull. Also, ablative paints will wear away faster from trailer rollers and bunks
Thanks much for the detail on the boat bottom paint. I have never owned a boat, but enjoy them and am really getting an education now that I own a 13 ft Whaler. Now that I have rescued the Whaler from the Salt water bays of the Florida coast I plan to keep it in the fresh water of Texas Thaks again
