I have a johnson Engine on my 1980 17' Montauk, i have no real history on the boat and don't know how old the engine is.
The boat is in the middle of a refurbishment and i wanted to install new gauges.
I have a feeling this is a silly question, but i'm gonna ask it anyway.
Does it matter which Tacho i use, i am led to believe that as long as the little selector switch on the back is pointing at the correct number of Valves that you can use any brand.
It should not make any difference as to the brand and yes, you have to see what the mfg indicates for the switch setting for your motor. I'm don't believe that it refers to with the number of valves though
It has been a while since I set up a tach. but I think the switch on the back is set to the number of cylinders. So the answer to the first question is no it does not matter which tach you buy.
Not to argue I have read the setting of the tach corresponds to the number of poles in the alternator/charging circuit. It may or may not be the same number of cylinders in the engine.
