I just purchased a 17' Sakonnet and discovered delamination at the area where the deck meets the transom and a bulge in the transom (it was in the area the previous owner had a small kicker motor. I removed a 10"x10" section of transom skin with a die grinder to dicover the transom is not completely plywood as I expected, pieces of plywood with foam below it. I am hesitant to remove more skin. The foam is very wet. I replaced the transom of a 20' Grady white a few years ago by cutting out the narrow strip at the top where the transom met the deck (leaving the inner and outer skins intact), drilling out all the wood with a ship auger bit, sanding and drying thoroughly, and filling the cavity with a polyester resin and chooped strand mix called Seacast. The repair has held extremely well. Before I get any deeper, does anyone have a input on transom repairs and how much of th foam is in the transom. I have some experience working with resins and making structural repairs but any info. specific to this boat would be greatly appreciated.
