I need an anchor for a newly acquired 1987 13 super sport. I am considering a folding grapnel anchor that will fit in the bow locker. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to the proper weight. I am thinking a 9 or 13 pound anchor may be sufficient, with a 4 foot chain and 50 ft of rope. I plan to use the boat mainly in lakes and salt water bays. Any tips would be much appreciated.
I use what you have stated but with a 6 ft. chain, and have had no problems.Where I boat the water is usually less than 15 ft. and don`t go out on sloppy days.
I use a Danforth-style anchor with 8' of chain on my 15'. It doesn't hold very well in silty lake bottoms, but is tenacious in mud, sand, gravel, rocks, seaweed, and any other bottom I've encountered in Puget Sound. I think you need more than 4' of chain if you plan to be boating when the wind blows.
If I anchored in lakes more often I'd have a second "silt" anchor - maybe a grapnel but more likely a mushroom.
I'm using a 10 pound mushroom anchor for my 13' and it seems heavy enough to hold her steady. It holds well in the lake but I haven't used it in salt water yet to see how it holds in the sand.
