Good morning everyone. I was wondering what your thoughts on this project would be.

Regarding the cracks on the transom, should I grind this all down or can can I simply sand and put MarineTex on it?

My father picked this boat up from the PA Game Commission before he passed away and am trying to restore it, slowly but surely.

I am almost done with the bow stop and will post a picture when completed of the before and after.

Those gel coat cracks are really just crazing which is typically caused by sun light exposure over time. Whalers from the 1960s were more prone to this than later models.

Applying an epoxy putty like MarineTex would not be a good solution. If you want the surface to be crack free, you will have to grind the gel coat off and apply a new coat of either gel coat or paint.

Any other method except what Tom suggests, is just a waste of your time and money, and you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

i have read that some use a dremel tool to gouge the cracks but this is a pretty large area.. when you say grinding do you mean taking an orbital sander with hefty grit paper to it????

also which gel coat repair kit or products would you use??

i will probably need a gallon i am guessing cause there are marks all over just not as bad as the transom...

thanks for your help guys and i guess i dont need to do all of this
