I'm looking at a 1985 Montauk 17 and I had a few questions.

It has the original 1985 Mercury 70hp oil-injected OB plus a matching merc 15hp kicker. Is this enough power and a reliable motor? According to the owner it runs great and has low hours. Of course.

The seller is asking 8500 - is this reasonable considering the age of the motors? From the pics it looks beautiful, new canvas and original bimini.

Thanks for your input, I have loved Whalers since I was a kid and am now thinking about buying one.

A couple years ago that would have been a fine price. In this market it is high.

Yes, 70 HP is fine power on the Montauk.

Hours have far less to do with the motors condition than its age, and it is old.

Most Montauk owners use at least a 90 to a 100hp. motor as the main and not more than an 8hp. for a kicker. How's the gel coat and is it bottom painted. This has a lot to do with the price. Does it have a trailer and if so what condtion is it in? There was one for sale just recently in Federal Way and it was an 1986. looked pretty descent with the hp. The price was also $8500.;

WOW! Tom have you seen any go for less than this in our area? I sold mine for $10,500 a little over a year ago. If this one is high what do you think a fair price for an Outrage 18 is in this market? I know the economy is in the dumpster but WOW. This evidently the time to buy.

I bought my 1988 Montauk for $5000. Admittedly it was a good deal as it came with a 1993 90 HP Mercury, a 15 HP Suzuki four stroke kicker, a galvanized EZ Loader trailer, Mills running canvas, a full Mills mooring cover, two electric Scotty downriggers and twin aluminum MIRAX 12 gallon fuel tanks.

And this was almost three years ago at the height of the market. Big difference between now and even one year ago.

If you're comparing numbers from national classifieds, it seems to me that the boats do get a bit more $ along the west coast.

I disagree with the 90-100 hp There are a lot of Montauks with 70 hp working fine. When I bought mine it had a 70hp Johnson two smoker, now a 70hp four stroke. The four stroke was a big difference with the power band. here on the left coast 70 hp in the ocean would be just fine ! I never run mine WOT no Need. Unless you want get air off a swell. This is my opinion not the group at whaler central... One more thing Why would you want a kicker engine? I see no need for one.

If you're going offshore, I hope your SeaTow membership is current.

As mentioned above, the area the boat is in seems to have alot to do with the price. I agree that a Whaler on the west coast usually is priced higher than one in Florida, or Mass. Lots of other factors of course.
And the boat you want is never located near your house, either!

In the Puget Sound area, where they are very common, kicker motors have very little, if anything, to do with safety and have everything to do with trolling for salmon.

Trolling for salmon is what our main purpose for a kicker is but on the open ocean don't ever feel that they would be of no use.

If you ever had a complete motor failure and it does happen, it might not get you in very well but it just could keep your bow into

wind and keep you right side up until help arrived.

I would use the age of the engine as a leverage for the price, I.M.O., you're just looking at a hull. A kicker is helpful for fishing, and some "Aux." help but, I would prefer "Marine salvage" (Sea Tow) if it were me.

original poster here, thanks for all the input - I know Whalers hold their value but still the 8500 sounds high considering the motor is 24 years old. What would a more reasonable price be? The BUC price on the hull is between 3200 and 3700 and that would be stealing it. I was thinking aroud 6500..

I agree that kicker motors do help. I have a 4.5 hp Merc on my montauk and it works great for me for trolling for trout. Dosent use much fuel and allows me to slow down and adjust speed well.
As for the original question on the boat, you have to be very leary of the old motor. I had an old merc burn up on me about a year after i had it. And i bought the boat from my dad! An old motor is the gamble, not the Whaler. If you just look at the motor as the weak link.

I just sold a real clean 85 Montauk with original power for $7,000. I am in the northeast, and quite frankly, I feel I was lucky to get that much as quickly as I did. Last year, I paid $10,000 for an 87 Outrage with 97 power, virgin bottom, and I feel I over paid by a couple of thousand. This is a buyer's market.

my .02, I paid 9K for a 84 last year with original power (90 Yami) and I put in another 3.5K in upgrades (Added Stern Seat, Had the Hull Buffed/Polished, All wood taken off stripped + 12 Coats of Varnish, Bimini)

My first real ride after I got it in the water and all the upgrades done, that 24 yr old Yami blew a cylinder and I had to repower. Ended up going with a new Yami 2-Stroke (Much diliberation on 2 stroke vs. 4 but ended with the 2). That was another $7K by the time it was all rigged up and ready to go.

9K + 3.5K + 7K = 19.5 ----> Moral of the story....NEVER TELL YOUR WIFE what it really cost you...but love every minute of it. In theory I could of done 1.5K of that work myself had I been able to devote the time....I guess where I am going with all this is that it has to be something you cherish. I personally think the looks of my boat with all the wood finished is absolutly fantastic next to a 2009 170 Montauk (29K). I feel I have a brand new boat and paid less than a new boat price.

It is a buyers market. I got my 1970 Nauset with a 1990 88hp with 20 hours (verified!) on a rebuild, a 6 hp 4 stroke kicker, scotty downriggers, VHF, FF, and GPS on a 2007 trailer for 4000. It took some looking, in fact a couple years, before the right (to me) deal showed up. Of course I've dropped about 1500 more into her, along with at least 100 hours of sweat equity, but to me it's still a hell of a deal and I love the boat.

I'd say figure 80% of the cost you are looking at on a used boat is the power. In your case I would think that asking price. is too high, perhaps by as much as 3K.

Figure a rebuild/repower in at best 2 years. Check pricing ona 70-90 HP engine and then you will have a bettter basis for your decision.

One thing I found out when looking at boats, here in the bay area of CA, a whaler seel for orethan a lot of areas. Not sure why but it is the case.
