What you are describing is commonly referred to as "Green line seperation". The top edge of the transom has exposed fiberglass that is not finished at the factory and is on many of the classic (pre-1990) models. My 1987 Montauk had minor green line separation.
A photo will help verify your boat's crack is green line separation and not a stress crack.
