While looking to purchase a used Whaler, I've noticed that alot of sellers proudly advertize that the boats' bottom has never been painted. Apart from making it easier to detect hull flaws, is there some real selling point to this? The first thing I would be inclined to do is to put anti fouling paint on it -- am I missing something?
Layers of bottom paint can also hide problems, past repairs, and some signs of impact damage. If there has been damage done below the waterline to a boat without bottom paint it is much easier to spot.
Personally I would prefer to find a whaler without bottom paint. For me is really is an aesthetics call. I hate how an off color bottom paint harshly interrupts the classic lines of the hull. That is why I had custom bottom paint mixed to match the gel coat color of my 22 Outrage. It solved the need to have it on to keep it in the water as well as it did not aesthetically hurt the lines of the boat.
Jeff – that looks awesome. (If you don’t mind) How much extra did that cost you to have the custom mix made up and did you need to remove the old blue paint first? Mine is currently black and I am curious as to whether the custom would cover it. Unfortunately, I just had mine re-done (didn’t even think about this approach), but when the boat needs it again, I might go the route you took.
