There is an article in this months Soundings Magazine (great rag by the way) about repowering a classic boat. In the article they show a guys 1980 22 Outrage in which he added a 2 foot closed transom extension. Really quite cool.

I like the mini radar arch around the console.

Kamie,
I agree, the mini-arch looks very practical. It allows for the installation of a very important off-shore piece of equipment in a cost effective, out of the way manner.

Wow, great transom modification Scott! I wish they had more specifics of how it was done...

I'm curious as to why the new transom has those two channels in it on both sides vs being one solid unit out to the sides?

If you are talking about the cut outs on the bottom, each side I would guess that would be for trim tab mounting. some of those cool tucked out of the way kind.

Yeah, it almost looks like the center unit is the size of a Whaler Drive, and the outer pieces are the 2' extensions of the sides. Never thought of trim tabs, that's probably it. One of the great things about a mod like this is the ability to incorporate things like that into the overall design.

Sorry to be a naysayer but that wrecked the hull.
Looks like a bastard reverse sheer post-classic stern. Why not do a splash dam or traditional full transom with brackets or sell the boat and buy a full transom model.
Then again, his boat, his choice.

Interesting suggestions Phil, I've thought about them both for my 22'. But the splash dam is tricky due to the way the splash well has been moulded into the hull. And the full transom seems a better solution, but the bracket will change the static trim of the boat, and ours is already stern heavy. His design seems a bit more like a Whaler Drive with a swim platform integrated into it. The extra flotation would come in very handy.

I'm with you Phil. Ugh. They even ran pin-striping down that awful contour, as if it needed more attention.

I'm not disagreeing with either of you (Phil & Matt) - I more so pointed it out due to its ingenuity. I think its one heck of an accomplishment for a homegrown project. I myself would have chosen a different (less Euro) line but I guess that's why Haagen Dazs has so many flavors. Also the magazing Soundings. If you haven't picked up a copy you might want to check it out - There was also an article in their on a guy who redid his Nauset console and made a rear bench for a 72 Outrage 21 with twin 90's.

I like the radar arch. Although, I could not help but notice that the radar dome needs to be leveled out a bit. I think while on a steady plane, the radar will be shooting into space on the forward side of the sweep and into the water on the backside of the sweep.
