I am in the process of refinishing all the wood on my 1982 18' outrage. I have a question; Is the wood teak or mahogany? In the past I have refinished with teak products, but I have been told the wood is mahogany and it would be better to protect with a varnish. I have seen the articles on refinishing with teak oil, but would like some input.

Thank you, this is a great website!!

Sea Gypsie,
Welcome to WC!
If you have mahogany, a varnish finish will look great. Thin the 1st couple of coats with xilene. add additional coats at full strength. about 7 -10 coats will look like glass. Block sand with 320 inbetween coats. Theres many good name brands of Varnish on the market. We use Interlux Schooner her at my shop.

Regards,
Mike

I believe that you have teak. You will find several helpful tips in the articles section. Both the site owner and I have done articles on refinishing the teak gunwales on an Outrage. (The Hard Way and The Easy Way) Check them out and have fun with your Outrage.

Mike,
I`ve done a lot of varnishing over the years, but never used xylene as a thinner. Always used paint thinner or years ago used turpentine. I just use xylene as a solvent. What is the advantage?

Teak. Used on sailboats and outdoor furniture and many other applications for its grain. It will last the longest. Mahogany looks great. It is what came on Whalers. Put 10 coats of poly-urethane on it though.

I just redone my wood work in my 13. I used mahogany wood with 2 coats of West system epoxy. Sanded them smooth and varnished with with 4 coats. Very expensive way to do the wood but well worth the time and effort. Should last for years to come I hope anyway.....
