Hi folks! Growing up on Long Island in the '60s, my father had a Nauset. It was perfect because it was plain with external gas tanks and very few gadgets for him to break! I would like one, but those in good condition are demanding top $; those that are affordable all have had the wood consoles replaced. I've noticed that there are wood consoles and benches for sale on the web -- how difficult is it to replace a console? Would most boat yards do it? Any idea how much they would charge? Are the console/benches for the Nauset/Sakonnet/Eastport interchangable? Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thanks,
Consoles can cost as much as $2500 for brand new. Installation can be several hundred dollars. On my 68, I went with newer updated console and seating because it is plastic and does not require as much care.
Though the wood is very nice and it is very cool, I don't have the time to keep up with the varnishing etc. In additon, the plane and sailboat keep me really busy.
I leave the boat outside under a tarp which helps but it still requires maintenance.
If you have time and DIY it it can be done fairly cheaply.
