So in my infinate wisdom to remove the peeling black laminate on the console of my Montauk, it came off quite easily but left a glue residue....so of course I got the Goof Off and it took the glue right off and it looks fantastic. However, the rag soaked in the Goof Off touched the Black Cowling under the steering wheel and removed the black paint on the (what I am guessing) is the aluminum cowling.

I am guessing I will need to paint this cowling, but my question is can it be done with an artists brush and paint? Do I need to take it all apart and have it sprayed? Also, what kind of paint works best on Aluminum?

Thanks All

Bill

You could pull the steering wheel off, and the bezel(cowling) will lift right off. Get a can of black spray paint (rattle can from the Auto parts store and respray the whole bezel. Prime it first with metal primer.

Or you can buy a small can of black enamel, flat, semi-gloss or gloss, and a small paint brush and touch it up. Probably impossible to match it exactly.

While the steering wheel is off would be a good time to deep clean it and polish it. Also clean the shaft on the helm unit and the bore in the wheel.Always look at the bright side. Whalerman
