I have a thought on it. Mahogany is about half as much $ as teak. If that is important to you then its a good reason to use mahogany instead. If money doesn't matter, use whichever you prefer based on its qualities.

Teak is more naturally oily, which could be better for use in salt water. The only reason I can see for you switching to mahagony is if it is more asthetically pleasing to you.

BG, I think as long as you make sure they're protected, they'll look great! Take a look in the Photobucket link in romd133's post below. He's redoing a 25' Outrage and used mahogany like you want to. No pics of them on the boat yet, but shown all finished with the other woodwork.

When I did the seat in my 15 it is Mohagony and it looks great. I guess that is what I am shooting for. Teak I am sure could look as good I just had the oportunity to get it done. It was kinda of a wild hair Saturday I started and about an hour later I had the old ones off. I noticed some cracks and they just looked rough. So I have a cabinet maker in the family who needs some work and he has alot of Mahogany left over so it worked out. The boat stays in garage when it is not in use. Thanks for the replies. BG

If I may ask, whats wrong with the ones on your whaler. I have a 1990 19 outrage with the fiberglass ones and the ply core is failing, not soft yet but... Was thinking on teak replacements.Whalers and teak/mahogony seem to go together as we all know. Thanks

Whalerman , one side has a small split in it and the port side has a place worn on it from a previous owner. I am not sure what was the cause. My friend who is in the cabinet business said they could be fixed however since I have them off I thaught I would replace them. BG

Boston Whaler did not use mahogany because it is too soft grained to take the abuse of gunwale surfaces, and must be heavily varnished to stand up to constantly being wet. It turns black very easily around screw holes, and is not strong enough in thin board sections to take all the fittings and stress often applied to the gunwales, such as rails, outirggers, downriggers, etc. I think it is a mistake to use it, and will hurt the value of the boat.

Depend's on what YOU like, cost, and what's available. Both are beautiful looking brightwork on a Whaler.
