I am looking for advice on how to remount a small swim platform on our 1989 Montauk . The teak platform is just an inch or two too low and as a result ends up with a bunch of growth on it. One bracket mount is below the water line. Thanks,Joe.

Joe -

One problem with mounting a platform on this model year is no wood backing in the transom. In addition, most of the platforms I see (and I had one) have a strut that goes down and needs to be attached with a lag screw.

You may want to consider ditching the platform and getting an over the gunnel telescoping swim ladder.

Thanks. I hear you, but with kids- need a platform. This worked well last season, and I want to keep it. With only one bracket attaching below water line with one lag bolt, it is not an issue-the others are through bolted with large stainless washers- very well done installation. I just want to move it up a few inches. I am thinking some 5200 for the abandoned holes and then just duplicate what was done before, just a little higher. What do you think?? Joe.

This is what I had on my 1987.

If you bent the top support down and clamped down the end to make another flange, you could raise it up 1-1 1/2 inches.

Then again, if you raise it up a bit more, the upper support may be long enough (with some work) to wrap over the top of the transom and be attached on the inside wall.

I would not fill holes with 5200 since it is an adhesive. Consider marine tex or other patch material.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

Joe,

I have a 89 17ft super sport limited. It is the same hull as a Montauk like yours... There is wood in the transom. I mounted a small platform and ladder as well, see my page. The top half has wood... the bottom does not. As I drilled in to the top section, I clearly saw the wood filings coming from the hole. Nothing but fiberglass with foam inside on the bottom section. BTW no holes needed to be made below the water line.... I had the ladder made by martin marine design (He is on this forum).. He also sells these on ebay, very well made.

Free free to pm me.

Jon
