I just received a Stern light set up for my 13' from Eric over at Specialty Marine. The light is fantastic but it's 52" inches long and way too long for a 13' Classic BW. What is the proper length that the stern light should be for my 13'? If you have the BW stern light on your 13', could someone please measure it and get back with me?

Many many thanks!

Too funny Cliff, I just got mine from there too, and I was thinking that it might be a shade (like 2 feet) longer than I'd want. I think it has to be a certain distance higher that the bow lights. I saw Tom W Clark mentioned it on the bare hull guardian thread. I'll try to find it.

Found it in the New, Bare Hull Guardian 19' to Montauk 190 Project thread...

52" is going to be pretty close to accurate.............The one for my 15' is a little over 4' long so I would say that you are right on the money............Granted though it does seem like overkill, but as John said, the idea is to get the light up for visibility.

Thanks Kamie.

So to wrap this up, here is what we know so far
1. Original Stern Lights for 13 foot Whalers were 30 inches tall, pole was chrome plated brass and the globes were made by Kainer (same folks who supplied the original steering wheel)

2. The height was raised to 55 inches about 1984 and the pole used was Stainless Steel. A slight bend was added to the pole.

3. Stern lights are still available from BW but I believe they are now 60 inches to comply with new regs.

Perfect. So if we were to chop the lights down to about 30", we would have the lights about the same height as they came from BW in the 60's. I mainly want the light to be above the motor cowling by about a foot so there is a 360 degrees view of the light.

I "think" it's at least 1 meter high req. by law, not sure if it's "State" or "Federal". Our smaller model's sit low in profile, so a tall light is not a bad idea (more visable). I too have been trying to get the stern light correct, I have 2 short one's on the back, good for fishing (low profile), more light, and can be seen on "both" sides of the engine, and a redundant system. It's probably "Illegal", and I don't want to give the impression of 2 "anchored" boats. I wanted a stern light high w/ a slight bend at the top, I also wanted to mount it to a folding Antenna base, I had a good design all laid out but, nowhere in the world of "Marine Hardware" do the make a piece that will adapt a 7/8" or 3/4" s/s pole to a 1" threaded ant. base.

Have you tried a PVC Male or female adapter from a plumbing supply? Cool

I actually wouldn't chop down the light pole. higher is better for safety

Navigational rules, Rule 23c.Power driven Vessels of less than 12 meters may exhibit All around white light and side lights. All-around white shall be 39" above combo bow light.
International and inland rules.

I tend to agree Cliff, higher is better for safety. Is it the height while up that's bothersome, wanting to keep it original to the year, or storage issues when down that have you considering shortening it?

Most information above is correct. The original lights were about 30" tall. They may have been increased to 36 at some point but we know that in 1983 the light was redesigned to 54" tall to meet the then new "one meter" rule.

The pole of the light was changed to stainless steel form chrome plated brass tubing to help make it stronger; the longer the pole, the easier it is to bend and crimp.

The bend near the top of the pole was added at this time. The 54" light was used on the small classic Whalers form then on. There was no 60" light used on these lights and the 54" light is still available form any Whaler dealer. It uses the same Perko chrome-on-brass light fixture.

The Kainer light was used up until 1973 or so.

I do not believe there is any obligation to retrofit the taller light to Whalers built before 1983.

1 meter = 39"

Well I read what you guys have said and then I went out to the garage to do a little "Figurin'" (Texas slang for Figuring) and I think you are right. I will go ahead and keep it the Stern light the length it came as it is always best to side with safety, especially when my two little kids are usually always with me when I am out on the Whaler.

I really appreciate the inputs and as always, Whaler Central is the best place to come for information.

Thank you!
