I have just sold a 38 foot cruising sailboat. The below deck nav station on the boat had an elaborate Garmin chart plotting system and a repeater for a variety of data. At the topside helm station I ran a pretty simple Standard Horizon C150 plotter. Over the years, we used the Standard much more than the Garmin for reasons solely related to placement. The Standard unit is user friendly and never let us down.

My “replacement” boat is a 17 foot Montauk and I likely will be replacing an older generation Furuno plotter/depth finder. I am seriously considering a Standard CPF 180i, which is an updated version of my old plotter, with a fish finder built in. Street price on this unit is about $500, but you will need to buy a transponder and a chart card. Here is a link to one retailer with this unit:

http://www.thegpsstore.com/Standard-Horizon-CPF180i-Chartplotter-Fishfinder-Combo-P1519C75.aspx?UserID=15825069&SessionID=ancGj5rRlWEYxaKdkJ6i

The Standard Horizon website for this unit is here:

http://www.standardhorizon.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=232&encProdID=EDAB1DF4CC08DED2AD484520E63AE701&DivisionID=3&isArchived=0

I have used a number of Standard Horizon products over the years and one of the best aspects of dealing with them is their tech support. They are friendly, helpful and accessible. When I installed a number of helm instruments several years ago they literally talked me through some technical setup issues via cell phone.

I haven’t made up my mind regarding electronics on my new (19 year old) Montauk and likely will see how the Furuno does (it was hugely expensive when new). Nevertheless, these Standard units are reasonably priced and east to use. This particular unit is on my own shopping list.

Balene. Is the system you're describing compact? I have limited space available as my intentions are to use this equipment on a 13 footer.....for inland fishing and mainly on lakes.

John , Lowrance is moving to HD so the 500 series are discontinued so not listed. Every year they change models. I would call or go buy. There having a " fishing spring sale". BG

I did look at the Lowrance models and was intrigued but I think it will be the Humminbird.

I think I might go and get the same Humminbird this weekend. I have been working on my boat so I have to put some things back together before it can float. That 798 looks like the ticket to me.

Hi, Cliff-

They are the smallest of the horizontal display plotters. In terms of a footprint, they are a bit bigger than the smaller Garmins, but the vertical display on those Garmin units is considerably harder to read than a horizontal presentation (5 inches left to right diagonal on the Standard as opposed to 4 inches top to bottom diagonally on a comparably priced Garmin).

If space is a real concern, Garmin might be your best option, which also has controls that you might prefer. As I said in my earlier post, I have owned both and ended up using the Standard simply because it was a small conveniently placed unit. Overall I preferred the operation of the Garmin which is a little more intuitive, but both are great.

The Standard comes with a pedestal mount that saves space in its own way and I feel certain that it would fit on a 13.

It's a little hard to find Standards in the stores these days. West had a falling out with them on plotters that a West employee told me was about $$$margins. They are around though and I would not hesotate to buy online.

Good luck.

balene, wow...that Standard sure is a nice piece of equipment. The one jquigley showed not only had the GPS and sonar, it had a VHF radio in it too! Wow....

Hey guys.

I think that I might steer away from that ebay ad. If you look closely, he is selling three boxes, together with a transducer and an antenna. The plotter is the basic CP180i which has the capability of adding fishfinding to the display with an added box. That's the second piece in the auction. Together, the street price on these two items is about $630. The Standard CPF180i has the fish finder built in and it sells for $520-$599.

The VHF in this sale is a pretty nice Standard unit, but it adds a third box and is the largest of the Standard VHF sets. It goes for about $175 and takes up a ton o' space. The transducer is a $125 item. I can't tell about the antenna, but figure that a good one will set you back $125. I'll bet that this guy is scrimping on the antenna, so his $999 price is just about street price, with him taking away your prerogatives.

I think that I would go with the all in one CPF 180i plotter/fish finder and make my own choices about a VHF radio and antenna. His VHF unit is about $50 more than a very serviceable Standard radio with a smaller footprint.

If space is a problem and you want to combine all three functions into one unit, check out this bad boy that I have started to consider myself:

http://www.thegpsstore.com/Standard-Horizon-CPV350-Color-ChartplotterVHF-P1032C17.aspx

At $1,179 with transducer included, that's a great deal in my opinion. Maybe later this year I will clean up the clutter on my Montauk's console with one of those guys if I can't control my usual urge to fix what ain't broken. Watch this space for a used Icom VHF and a Furuno WF 1650 plotter/fish finder!

FYI the A65 series can still be had new in box; I just picked up a A65 with newer Rayatsr 120 GPS, DSM25 sounder box and P85 transducer for a LOT less than I expected. Also comes with a navionics chip.

If anyone is looking, a buddy has a marine shop here in CA that hooked me up; PM me for information if you need any.

Just picked up a Raymarine DS600x for $325. Bethel Marine is running them on special. I also needed a ff and from what I read it sounded like a good deal.
