So the tach on my 1990 88 SPL always reads about 700-800 RPM when not running. When I start it, it drops to zero during starting. At idle, it jumps around quite a bit but seems to indicate the speed correctly, around 700 RPM. At speed it jumps around, but at WOT, it shows steady, at 5400-5500 RPM. (I don't go over that speed since it is a 1990). Was at the shop and thought of getting another tach until the price rang up at 135 bucks.
Just wondering if anyone esle sees this.
It is the factory OMC tach.

If the tach doesn't go to zero with the key "ON", then something is wrong with the tach.
If it is jumping around, it could be your charging system or your tach.
Is your charging system working properly?

Dunno if there is a charging system on a SPL; is there?

Should be.
That is why I recommend everyone having a Voltmeter on their boat. Whether it is part of a fishfinder or GPS, or a stand alone voltmeter.
This way you know your system is charging your battery.

There is a voltmeter on the GPS and the FF; both stay steady around 12.3-12.5 depending on temp and how I charged prior to getting out.
I'm looking at the BRP site and see no listing of any type of charging system for the motor. Perhaps I'm missing somehting here but it looks to me like there is nothing there.

I assume that is not running? if it is running it sounds low to me. Should be much higher.

I had a 1998 70 hp Evinrude and the tach did the same thing. I wouldn't worry about it. Now if you are running at normal cruising speeds and your tach is off (usually lower) You might have a charging problem (stator or rectifier).

The voltage should not show 12 volts when running.
That is only showing the battery voltage.
When running, it should be charging from anywhere from 13 to 15 volts approximately. This tells you your charging system is charging.

ok, well based on that I am assuming that the most likely cause is the rectifier.
I'll look into getting it checked out and if need be replaced.
