Hello everyone, first post, first whaler. Looks like a great forum here. Heres my situation....

I bought and thought I stole a '91 13 whaler on a trailer with no engine for $600 bucks. It is exactly what I needed since I have a 40 horse mariner to put on it. I looked at it in the dark (first mistake) and everything looked OK. It had been converted to a CC with a flip back seat/cooler and had been repainted at some point in time. No big deal, I really figured I cant go wrong for what I'm going to use it for. The boat is actually in decent shape, cracks in the painted over gelcoat and floor etc. Nothing too bad. My second mistake was not really knowing the history and specs of 13's thru out the years, I should have educated myself.

When I got it home and started looking it over then online at various years of them, I'm realizing something is not right. First of all, I can't find any serial #'s anywhere. Should it have a tag or are the #'s engraved in the transom? I have the title with the #'s and it states its a 91 model. But, after looking at pics of different years, I'm noticing my bow storage locker is rectangular shaped and not more squared off like I'm seeing in pics of later models which makes me think something isn't right. What have I got here?? How can I verify its what the title states it is? It is currently registered here in NC but I'm worried this thing might have been stolen and retitled at some point. Any Ideas?
Steven B

While stencil and HIN's help greatly, if you can take some good high quality images of the bow area, interior, splashwell, a front and a rear 3/4 we should be able to get you some thoughts. Both on a year as well as if it really is a Whaler. You can post the images on a photo hosting site and link to them or start a personal page here and post them.

I'm pretty much figuring its not a whaler. Looking at the paperwork, NC Registration calls it a whaler. NC title says boston walker??
One of the two is a misprint, likely keyed in wrong or something. Doing a google search, I can't find anything on a Boston Walker boat. Anybody heard of such a thing? Thanks
SB

The stern appears to be reminiscent of a post 1972 whaler, but the bow is from the previous era of pre 72 whalers. I believe this to be a knock-off, unless it is the offspring of a couple whalers who were decidedly different in age. Then again, all boats are female, hence we call them "her" and "she" so I will stay with my former assertion.

The boat's stern and bow are laid out just like my 1975. I am viewing the images on my iPhone but I have to say it looks to be a whaler.

1975 was the first year of this 25" style transom. The smirk came in 1972.

Thanks for the pics, looks identical to mine. Safe to say its not a '91 like the title says.

HIN # is NCZ29323I091 on the title. Does this even sound like a whaler HIN #?

Thanks

No that is a North Carolina home built boat state assigned HIN. Most states do that if the original tag goes missing along with a title. 1991 probably was the year they had a HIN and title reassigned. I have better photos of the boat after I cleaned it but will have to post a link in the morning when I am on a computer. The iPhone does not have a copy paste option.

Hey Jeff, (or Tom or Mike, or anyone else other than meGrin) when did the bow locker change to the more squared shape? I had always understood that the stern and bow changed simultaneously. I couldn't possibly have been ill informed....

John it was was in the late 70's early 80's when bow locker went to a square shape and along with that the floor chaned from the rolled type to a flat floor as well as the bow triangular step pads where added.

The interior mold of the 13 footer changed in 1978 to add the bow step pads and the squarish bow locker.
