I've seen quite a few photos of classic 18 Outrage boats with the speakers mounted in port and starboard side panels. I think this is a good spot because the side rigging tunnels make it easy to run speaker wire. Also, the sound is aimed inside the boat towards center console.
I'm having my boat rewired. The person doing the rewiring thinks it's a bad idea to put a speaker in the port side panel because this panel covers fuel filler and vent hoses, and might therefore present a fire danger.
I made mine out of wood and copied the oem fiberglass frame and mounted the speakers in them I'll post pic later in the week. I run 6 speakers with a 200 watt amp on a 22' Outrage comercial haul tricked out the dash touch screan.
I also did a complete rewire 2 years age durings it's resturation father son project.
