I have a new Garmin 398 and have mounted the transducer according to the instructions but I am getting very intermittent signals. I've read the tutorials and have it mounted flat to the water line, but it is located on the starboard side between the kicker and the main motor. The signal does not seem to improve with lowering or raising the kicker, or the engine off or on. Is there any advice or experiences with this Garmin model on an '85 Montauk? Should I switch to the port side?
dmrose I think I remember reading some thing on the CW site years ago.It had to do with which side to mount it on, some thing to do with which way the prop turned as I recall. I think they said to mount it on the port side. you may check over there in the arcives(SP). I have a transducer mounted on the starboard side works ok I guess. I don't use that one much, it was put on as a back up for the plotter/sounder combo unit.
From the information you gave it doesn't sound like you have a mounting position problem. You indicated that you have the interference problem even when the engine is not running. With most minor electrical problems it is usually a bad ground wire. Check all of your wire connections. If this does not correct the problem change the transducer.
