Hey guys, I am considering a new battery set up for my rig
As it is now I have two starting batteies two engines, one battery switch(1-2-both) and the "house" load running off the stbd starting battery.
I have been advised that a good set up would be a battery for each engine(each with its own switch, w/ a switch in between for emergency starting)) and a House baterry (with its own switch) and a 3 batt 2 alt battery isolator to charge all this junk.
Any input?
Thanks in advance.

Yeah that setup is the cats a$$ if you dont mind the space and weight the extra equipment uses up.

I have that setup on my Sea Ray with twin V6's and it works well. If you spend a lot of time at anchor it would be worth it. You might as well add an inverter for the coffee maker while you are at it.

Thanks Teak for the reply, I'm still not sure wich way I will go with this yet, but a change from the current system is certainly in order.

Check out BEP. They make a nice compact switch cluster that does what you are talking about. It also included a Voltage Sensitive Relay ("VSR"Wink that you will want to charge that third battery (House).

In my opinion, the switches are really optional items. They provide an emergency method of turning off electicity to the motor. However, if you turn off the switch accidentally, while the motor is running, you will probably blow the stator ($1,000 repair) and that motor is done for the day. Just something to consider.

Most outboards do not have a switch and are directly connected to the battery. There does not seem to be any large number of problems with this setup. You can always disconnect the battey cable at the battery if necessary. The battery should have a wing nut that provides a quick method of disconnecting the battery. If the batteries are not easily accessible, a battery switch is a good idea.

I am surprised how many people put in top of the line expensive battery switches, but leave old rotten fuel lines in place until they leak.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks 25,
funny you mention bep as I was just checking out there products on there web site before I came to check out this place (which I haven't done for a while, looks great)
any hoo I was looking at a similar cluster set up from blue sea untill they advised me it was not waterproof (I intended to flush mount it)
I'll have to see if the bep cluster is waterproof or not.
By the way my engines are inboards (if it matters)
