Hi, Newbie here, I just purchased a 1987 Newport and need a cover for it. I was guessing the price to be around $400.00, I checked with the company that advertises here and they want twice that. So my question is, does the Newport design match any other models, or come close enough that it will fit, because none of the other cover manufacturers know what a Newport is. I looked at the Sport 17 with rails, and it looked very similar. Any help in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob
I am not sure where in Michigan you are but, I would recommend looking for a good local shop. Nothing beats having a cover made right over the top of your boat instead of one a manufacture somewhere else that cuts and sews from old templates. It should cost about the same though you would not have to pay for shipping and you should be able to build in any custom feature you want with ease. If you are in the Detroit Area I can make a couple recommendations. I have a Newport with a custom cover and do like it better than others I have seen. I know there are a lot of people out there that swear by OEM canvas maker for the classics however, I am just not one of those people. Their work is good yes, however, I have seen as good if not better from two local shops I know of for the same or less cost.
I also would not think an off the shelf cover from an off brand company that was for a Montauk or Super Sport would work right. Though if you really wanted to do it on the cheaper side, you could try a Super Sport cover and see if it fits. If not you should be able to return it.
Jeff, Thanks for the info. I guess I forgot to mention that the boat is in Florida, and I'll be down there in a month to pick it up. I could probably wait until I get back to have one made, but I'm a little worried about all the slop I'll pick up on the trip back. Oh ya, I'm in Clarkston. Thanks, Bob
I would not worry much about the slop on the trip back. Just be sure to wash it out when you get home.
Clarkston eh? My home town for 22 years.
Any way the two local shops I would recommend are:
Blue Water padded accents:
211 Water St, Sarnia, Ont. Canada
Ask for Sam or Sandy
519.344.5091
We have used Sam's shop for the last 10 years. They has made us mooring covers, console covers, as well as remade many cushions for our past Whalers. They have also made a full mooring cover and complete camper cover for our 32' Wellcraft. Amazing craftsmanship.
Dockside Canvas:
29939 South River Road
Harrison Township, MI 48045
Ask for John Bowen

My father used them a while ago but, I have friends with whalers who swear by his work. I have seen it in person and do agree it is very nice quality.
