I recently bought a 1995 Dauntless DC Boston Whaler (17 foot) with a 1997 Mercury Mariner 115 HP engine. One of the things that did not work was the MPH guage. I took the boat to a marine shop for some minor work and to get the motor winterized. The shop said that the pickup for the speedometer was restricted and they removed some debris. Can anyone tell me the location of the pickup? I thought the repairman said it was internal to the motor but I am not sure.

Yes, many newer motors have a built in speedo or pitot tube in the lower case.

Look for a tube running back to the motor from your speedometer and follow it.

On my Etec, there's a small hole in the leading edge of the lower unit just above the gear bullet that's the pick up for the speedo. About 8" above that you can see the pitot tube connection Joe mentioned with the black tube that runs all the way to the speedo unit in the console.

Thanks so much for the info guys. You are 100% correct. Bought four (4) books for the motor and finally found it listed in the parts manual.
