Any type of epoxy mix (most will recommend West System or MAS) with Microballoons will work, but I just started trying out Interlux Interfill on my Whaler and have liked it so far. It's not the cheapest, but it goes pretty far. Most importantly, it sands easily and it's a simple one to one mix. I found it at Boater's World.

Do the fillers do just as good a job in this app. as the epoxy with the thickener? Seems the latter would be stronger, but the filler would be easier to shape. Given the amount of work, what would last the longest?

I have used it several times and have been totally satisfied with it. I just finished my 15 and repaired over a 100 blisters on the bottom with great and timely success.

I belive that any two part filler will be fine for what you are doing. If you were deeper in the glass I would say use a filler with glass in it but It does not look like you need that. Again two part fillers will stay. Single part auto fillers I am told will shrink over time. This is why people use the epoxy or two part fillers. I used the 3m filler on my 15 project over 5 years ago and it has held up great.

If you would have just sanded the gelcoat down to the glass in those bad sections, the spider cracks would have been sanded off, and you wouldn`t have the problems you now face. Filling spider cracks are for those who are not going to paint their boat, and only have a few.
