Recently my volt meter was reading 16+ and then stopped reading at all. The next time I tried to start the boat the battery was dead (after being on a trickle charge and disconnected). I replaced the battery and the rectifier, based upon suggestion from another post and she started right up. However the volt meter is still not reading. I have not put it back in the water yet, but plan on doing so tomorrow. Any suggestions as to the possible problem? Thanks
I believe the rectifier also acts as the voltage regulator. I know on my 1985 70 hp Evinrude, all I had was the rectifier....
When my charging circuit went haywire, it blew the rectifier and the tach.
I bought a new tach and a new rectifier and still had problems. Came to found out the new rectifier wasn't working properly. Replaced the rectifier under warranty and everything was fine again.
You are correct there is no regulator just a rectifier. I probably did fry the volt meter (not sure of the brand, etc.) but it is the original equipment on by 1973 Montauk as is the motor. I'll try replacing the volt meter as well and see if that resolves the problem. Thanks for the input.
