Occaisonally, my tach (quicksilver circa 1999) goes wild and reads much higher than the engine is operating at. The needle bounces around and then settles on the high reading. The wires going to the tach are all tight. What should I be checking?
If it was me I would start working backwards through all the connections/harness to the engine. If it connects to the shifter you may need to open it and check for bad connections (a pain ). If you find nothing wrong then it probably is the tach itself. If there is a pole switch on the back of the tach try turning it and return to original setting... A long shot maybe a dirty contact. You probably could pick up a used one cheap on ebay...

The Whaler is the one I like the best!!!
Roy, I have had the same problem with mine for the past couple of years. It comes and goes. Usually when I briefly am able to open her up to WOT the problem seems to be solved.
Take a look at my personal page and you will see a picture of my rewiring and some issues I had. Before I did it the tack would peak at 3k and stop and every now and then jump up and down. When I finished it all worked fine. Of course I also replaced the tack so I can't be sure which was the problem. But I'd I check wiring first, it might be cheaper. Both the old and new tachs are Quicksilver/Merc.
