Looking to get some feedback from current owners of E-Tecs. From what I can gather, most people speak very highly of them, but I was curious of what the Whaler crowd thought. This is high on my list of choices for repowering my 13 classic. I'm interested in the 30hp E-Tec coming out in the fall. I'd like to hear from owners of any hp e-tec as I interest in how the technology is holding up. Thanks!!!

I have a 60hp ETEC on my 15' Sport and could not be happier! Smile It is very quiet, no maintenance, has a fantastic warranty, cranks faster than any motor I have ever owned, sips gas, burns almost no oil, hauls ass, and is lightweight! Do I like it? No, I LOVE it and I'm not sure I will ever find a motor that I like better. Seriously, when I purchased mine the dealer also sold Yamaha, Suzuki, and ETEC. He talked me into the ETEC so I think that speaks pretty highy of them too!

When I bought my brand new 130 Sport about 6 weeks ago, I would have taken it directly from the selling dealer to an Evinrude dealer to swap the Merc 40 for an E-Tec 40. But I couldn't because the Evinrude is a few pounds over the max motor weight for the 130. Bummer.

SG,
First of all, I don't have an Etec. I can only relate several positive comments about them I have received unsolicited from several different people. For example, when my neighbor saw me tow home my 85 Outrage, he dropped by to inspect. He told me a touching story about fishing in Lake Michichigan with his dad on a 13' Whaler, and that his dad always wanted an Outrage....Then he added that my Outrage 18 with an Etec might be the coolest setup ever. (I've got the old Johnson.) I have a Can-Am four wheeler made by BRP and it is impressive. I think these Canadians are into quality. Good luck with your decision!

I repowered to a 75 ETEC last August. Everything advertised is true. Turn the key once and it is going. So quiet it's spooky. Shifting and acceleration is as smooth as silk. No more mixing the oil and I now top off the tanks (rather than fill) after a full day on the bay. I no longer have to figure how I'm going to afford the gas to go fishing.

This motor is a keeper.

In general I think the E-Tec is a great engine and a great technology. I was a bit disappointed at the E-Tec 20HP and 30HP, as I was hoping for older 13 footers they would give Tohatsu a run with short shaft versions so the older whalers didn't need brackets. Weight wise they are pretty much inline with the other offerings out there.
What year is your 13? If you can take a long shaft, the 30HP E-Tec at 177# is a great option. The other question is dealer support for whatever engine you choose.

i can only agree with everything that was said about the E-TEC in the prior posts. I just did my first maintenance on mine with 286 hours on it and only did that because the warantee expires this fall. It runs like hell, quiet as a mouse and sips both oil and gas. So far more then pleased with the motor. I did have my overtemp alarm go off recently, but the motor immediately throttled back on its own, and after allowing it to cool down i was able to continue my fishing trip with no problems. When i had the service done i had both the water pump and thermostat replaced, and have had no more alarms since.

AWESOME!!! Your comments are making my decision a lot easier. I knew I could count on the Whaler crowd for some good feedback.

Thank you very much for you input.

Thanks!!!!
