I just acquired a new SmartCraft system tach (Part #79-889222 A11) and the 3' tach harness (84-879979T 1) for my 2008 130 Sport. Now I'm confused as heck as to what I need next to hook this thing up. After much research (and no real help from the Merc Service Manual), here's what I've come up with:
1. One end of the tach harness plugs into the tach. No problem.
2. The other end is labeled "Junction Box." I'm aware of what the junction box is but I've been told that Part #84-892452A01 (a male-to-male 10-pin adapter) can be used instead of a junction box if I plan to use only one gauge. Not 100% sure if this is true or not.
3. Assuming I'm right about #2 above, the only missing piece is the data cable that runs from the engine to the tach harness. There appear to be three different types of data cables (each one available in 2 or 3 different lengths).
(A) 84-879981Txx ("xx being the cable length): SmartCraft data harness with resistors (1) Provides data link between SmartCraft System CAN Bus Components.
(B ) 84-879982Txx: SmartCraft data harness with (2) termination resistors Individual engine data link between SmartCraft ready engine and System Monitor, or System Tachometer. Allows for driving SC100 Series gauges and horn.
(C) 84-879980Txx: SmartCraft data harness with resistors (1) Provides data link between SmartCraft System CAN Bus with DTS (Digital Throttle & Shift).
Clearly I don't need (C) since it is a DTS cable. I think (A) would be used if I wanted to run the cable directly from the motor to the tach. Since my tach came with a separate tach harness, I don't think I want this one (although I suppose I could use this one and not use my harness).
I'm thinking that if I want to use my harness, I need (B ) and either a junction box or the male-to-male adapter to go between (B ) and my tach harness.
Does anyone know if I'm on the right track? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The adapter above lists for $16.75 and can be used instead of a SmartCraft junction box ($43 through Livorsi). If you expect to add a SmartCraft Speedometer in the future, it's probably worth buying the junction box instead.
Here's how you hook it up:
Running out of the stern end of the throttle control, there is a 10-pin connector which is in use (for your existing tach and alarm). Disconnect the 10-pin. Plug in the 10-pin adapter in its place. Plug the tach harness (the end that says "To Junction Box" ) into the 10-pin adapter. Plug the other end of the tach harness into the tach. The tach will light up momentarily and then go dark. Turn the ignition key to the on position. The gauge will come on. Follow the instructions (i.e. Press the MODE button when it tells you to) and the tach will auto-select the correct settings. You can then switch through the different screens using the MODE button.
It's that simple. Now I just have to figure the best way to get the tach harness through the rigging hole under the dash. The hole is too small to push the 10-pin connector through. Either I'll open up the hole or (more likely) cut and splice the harness. I'll post another thread asking for help on that one.
BTW, a BIG thanks to Seabob for confirming that I was on the right track !!! It worked, Bob !!!
